BBC Breakfast got a bit frosty as Sally Nugent didn’t hesitate to highlight her co-host’s annoying habit during the live broadcast.
The telly favourite, aged 52, temporarily left her usual spot at the BBC studio last Monday (July 15) and make a dig about presenter Jon Kay while she was on assignment in Berlin, Germany.
The city was buzzing post-Euro 2024 final, where England locked horns with Spain. Sadly, for footie fans back home, it was the Spanish squad who bagged the victory.
The entire nation was left gutted after the final whistle blew and Spain hogged the winner’s podium with a 2:1 scorelineEngland and Gareth Southgate just missed out on the glory. BBC viewers felt the weight of defeat just as heavily as the crestfallen team, with the morning show picking up on the gloomy vibes.
Taking over hosting duties from a remote location, Sally said: “Well done Jon. I love that you’re bringing the positivity. I’m hearing you say that someone has written into the programme saying ‘Could Jon please stop sighing’ so I’m glad you didn’t sigh at that point.”
There was an awkward pause of silence before she quickly carried on, adding: “Yet, there are things that we can take away from this tournament definitely, but second final in a row.”
Elsewhere on the programme, Jon grumbled to This Morning Live buddies Helen Skelton and Gaby Roslin about flying solo while his colleague gallivanted off to Germany.
The trio were chinwagging about the upcoming guests on the BBC show at half 9 in the morning when they suddenly switched to nattering about houseplants. Helen quipped: “Mark is raging that we haven’t got enough plants out here but not as cross as he will be with you Jon Kay, you haven’t even got a cheese-plant in there [she pointed at his empty looking studio].” as she gestured towards his barren studio.
Jon was quick to retort with a hint of shock, “I haven’t got a Sally anywhere, I’ve got nothing, I’m just here all on my own, this morning,” which led Gaby to cheekily interject, “I hope you’re not calling her a plant.” Without missing a beat, Jon replied: “no, especially not a cheese-plant.”
