BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay shares ‘horrific’ experience as he ‘can’t look’ at co-star

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay has recalled a harrowing moment that saw him unable to look as went for a ride on the London Eye.

The 54-year old joined co-host Sally Nugent on the BBC’s red sofas on Wednesday to discuss the day’s pressing matters. One of those was the closure of the London attraction, which occurs every three years for cleaning.

Reporter John Maguire was at the location during the broadcast to help out and appeared with a paintbrush on screen, looking rather worried. “He’s just helping them tidy up a bit,” Sally explained, marking the first day of Spring. “A bit of a Spring clean.”

Jon took over: “They want to make it nice and fresh for the Spring and Summer seasons and they needed a bit of help. So John is harnessing himself up and he’s going to be taken up there and he’s going to dangle with a roller – I hope they’ve put some mats out.”

“I don’t know about dangling!” joked Sally. “We’re hoping he doesn’t dangle. He’s firmly secured.” That prompted Jon to remember his trip on the landmark. “I went in one of the capsules about 10 years ago and I literally had to close my eyes,” he said, as he showed viewers the exact position he was in at the time.

“I had to go down on my hands and knees because I couldn’t bear it. So the idea of dangling is horrific! But John… he’s up for anything our John. Live dangling here on BBC Breakfast!”

Sympathising with correspondent John, meanwhile, viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to comment on his helping hand. “Please stop leaving @JohnMag20 dangling at ridiculous heights again traumatising me let alone him #bbcbreakfast,” one concerned user wrote.

Another added: “Just so you know, not even for a million quid would I do what @JohnMag20 is doing right now. I wouldn’t abseil down the garden fence let alone down the side of the London Eye #BBCBreakfast.”

And a third joked: “Would I f*** do that! I’m s*** scared of heights! Good luck, John, fingers crossed here for your safe return #BBCBreakfast.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
