BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty shuts down co-star after apology ‘I have failed’

BBC Breakfast’s sports presenter Hugh Ferris said sorry to hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt on Saturday after a cheeky exchange with Olympic champs Emily Craig and Imogen Grant.

The apology came after Charlie’s quip to Emily and Imogen that they’d “forever be the reigning champions” of their Olympic event, leading to the gold medallists joking about it being a pub quiz question one day.

“It might be one we actually get right,” Naga cheekily chimed in before Charlie prodded Hugh to see if he was keeping up. Hugh pledged to pop a question about Imogen and Emily into his next pub quiz round.

As Naga and Charlie wrapped up with their guests, Naga teased Hugh: “Oh yeah you, there you are.”

“14 gold medals a lot of which we will be talking about today,” Hugh segued to the day’s sports headlines.

“Can you top that? ” Naga cut in as Hugh boasted: “Yes, I can top that with one goal, the opening match of the Premier League season. How about that if it is about numbers?”

Naga playfully put her colleague in his place with a “You don’t win today.”

“I have failed,” Hugh conceded, adding: “I apologise to both of you and to Imogen and Emily as well.”

Hugh owned up to his blunder before diving into the rest of the weekend’s sports action.

Earlier in the show, Naga had to interrupt Charlie during a particularly distressing story. Charlie shared a jaw-dropping tale from Florida, likening it to a scene straight out of the shark thriller ‘The Meg’, but with a Yorkshire Terrier as the protagonist.

“This is a story from Florida, and apparently it’s reminiscent of a scene from the movie, The Meg, involving a Yorkshire Terrier,” he began, recounting the harrowing moment when Maddie, the nine-year-old pup, vanished beneath the waves while swimming off her owner’s boat, reports the Express.

Naga, clearly distressed by the unfolding narrative, interrupted with a raised hand, “Wait a minute,” before anxiously inquiring: “Is this going to be a bad story?”

Despite Naga’s concern, Charlie pressed on to reveal the heartwarming twist: the little dog had miraculously survived the ordeal.

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
