BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent was forced to apologise to one of her co-stars after she got “distracted” live on-air.
Nugent returned to our screens on Tuesday (May 14) to present the BBC morning show. She was joined by regular co-host Jon Kay, alongside a plethora of well-known faces already familiar to viewers.
One of these was regular weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, who was giving up to date information and forecasts for viewers. During one of these weather updates, Sally and Nugent welcomed celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall as he discussed his new book.

Before Carol continued on with her weather report, Sally and Jon sat Hugh down on the sofa as he brought the hosts a plate of sweet treats. A bemused Sally questioned: “Treats made out of vegetables? There’s no chocolate in there, is there?”
It comes as Hugh came onto the show to promote his new book, which suggests that people need to eat at least 30 different plants a week in order to be healthy. These can range from traditional fruit and vegetables to more loose definitions to include spices and herbs.
Responding to his co-star, Jon hit back: “Anything is a treat!” He then turned to Carol to continue with the weather, as she admitted bluntly that the UK might not be getting any treats due to persistent rain coming in the next few days.
After her report Sally confessed to Kirkwood that they had provisionally taken their eye off the ball during her forecast, as the plate of sweet treats seemed to be given more attention. This proved to be much of a distraction for both hosts, as Jon squealed with delight: “We’ve got cake! The cake has arrived on the table.”
This quickly prompted Sally to apologise to Carol for not paying due diligence to her report: “Carol, thank you very much indeed. Sorry we’re a tiny bit distracted because we’re talking about food.”
The on-air blunder came after Carol shared the exciting news that she has written a new book, much to the delight of her fans. Taking to Twitter to give more details, she exclusively revealed that the novel was called Once Upon a Time in Venice.
Writing in the tweet promoting the upcoming book, she wrote: “I’m delighted to announce that I have a new novel coming in July called Once Upon A Time In Venice. This time I’m whisking you away to Italy where masquerade balls, opera stars and Hollywood all collide in a sizzling romance.”
This will be the fourth book that Carol has written, already having Under A Greek Moon, The Hotel on the Riviera and Secrets of the Villa Amore under her belt.
BBC Breakfast airs every day at 6am on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer
