BBC Morning Live host ‘hit with grief’ after sad family loss as fans offer support

BBC Morning Live presenter Michelle Ackerley has been comforted by fans following the anniversary of a tragic loss in her family.

The 39-year old, who has also fronted Watchdog and The One Show, took to her Instagram account on Wednesday (March 27) to share a sweet snap from her childhood. Alongside a youthful looking Michelle and her younger brother in the throwback photo was her dad, who passed away six years ago today.

Addressing her 16,000 followers, Michelle explained that she still suffers with “grief” at times as she reflected on one of her happiest memories as a kid. “6 years ago today my dad passed away,” she revealed.

“I spent last night scrolling through so many old photos and reflecting on special memories over the years. Grief is a process that certainly hits you in different ways at different times of your life.”

She continued: “I’m thinking of anyone on their own journey with grief today. I’ve posted this photo as it makes me smile. I vividly remember this day as a kid. My brother and I having a massive water fight with our dad. Me thinking I’d protect my afro by wearing a shower cap & helmet.”

Michelle’s fans were quick to wish her well in the comments section, with one writing: “Lovely to have memories to look back on and remember with fondness. Thinking of you today. Another penned: “I can only imagine how proud he was of you Michelle; sending you lots of love.”

A third added: “I can feel the joy through that photo. A beautiful memory. I’m so sorry for your loss. Big hugs.” And a fourth said: “Photos never become more important when it’s all we have left. The most difficult part of life is dealing with grief. Sending hugs.”

Michelle is currently on a break from her Morning Live duties but has been keeping busy with her role on Crimewatch Live. The star was first announced as part of a new Morning Live team with Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton back in December 2023, meanwhile.

Revealing her joy at the appointment at the time, Michelle gushed: “I am delighted to join Helen as part of the regular Morning Live line-up. I have absolutely loved being a part of the show so far, which we know can make a real difference to people’s lives. I’m looking forward to keeping our audiences company in the mornings and doing that alongside friends.

“I’ve known Geth and Helen for a long time now and believe or not, Helen and I used to flat share back in the day! To do this all in my home town of Manchester is a dream.”
