One BBC presenter says she broke down in tears following the news of a potentially transformative jab for skin cancer patients.
Clare Runacres was overcome by emotion when she discovered that the University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) was in its final trial stages for a personalised mRNA jab. As preliminary results suggest the jab might significantly boost melanoma survival rates and even prevent cancer recurrence, this 52-year-old broadcaster found hope.
Clare’s cancer journey started with a diagnosis of stage-two melanoma at just 20 years old during university, followed by surgery to remove the tumour. At the time, there were no available treatments to halt its spread, and nearly a decade later, the cancer returned, necessitating another surgery.

In a heartfelt X message, Clare admitted to fans: “Living in the shadow of cancer is hard. But days like today give me such hope. I read this article with tears in my eyes. I have spent so long trying to ward off the spread of my cancer, leading a quiet and careful life, balancing diet, exercise, sleep and stress, striving to live positively.”
She added: “I approach each day with gratitude and a glad heart knowing I’m one of the lucky ones, having survived so long. Seeing more and more promising options being developed for melanoma is amazing. Medical researchers and doctors are my absolute heroes.”, reports the Mirror.
“Thank you to those of you who strive every day to make this world a better place through the advancement of medicine. You are a lifeline to so many people.”
Last year, Clare and her hubby Mike hit the two-decade mark in their marriage, celebrating their 20th anniversary with their trio of kids.
Spilling the beans on her big day last year, she shared how she and her other half lived for the moment, given her battle with cancer. She revealed: “The wedding was a beautiful day, full of love and tears. Surrounded by our closest friends, we put our fears aside and danced until dawn. Even now I can’t look at the photos without feeling that raw emotion.
“In our first years of marriage, we lived in the moment. We didn’t know what the future held. It was liberating. We had no expectations of life, and so everything we did felt like an achievement.”
