BBC staff member behind Kate Middleton video addresses editing claims in update

A member of the BBC team who filmed the video of Kate Middleton announcing her cancer battle has addressed claims the footage was edited.

The Six O’Clock News on Friday (March 22) aired an emotional pre-recorded video message where The Princess of Wales bravely revealed that she had cancer. The mum-of-three said she was undergoing chemotherapy treatment as doctors had found cancer within her body after getting abdominal surgery.

Kate said: “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.

She continued, in the video said to be recorded on Wednesday: “My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”

A BBC Studios insider denied claims of editing the video and said the footage used was exactly as the team filmed it. The same team also covered the King’s Coronation and Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

BBC studios have said they had no editorial input in the message. The broadcaster simply recorded and gave the video to Kate’s team who made the message public.

It comes after royals faced a backlash over an edited photo of Kate and her children on Mother’s Day. The snap was later withdrawn by major photo agencies due to concerns over digital tampering, reports the Mirror.

Following the broadcast of the video, BBC Studios shared a brief statement saying: “BBC Studios filmed a message from the Princess of Wales at Windsor this week. We would like to wish Her Royal Highness a speedy recovery.”

Chris Ship, who covers Royal news for ITV News, believes that Princess Kate’s choice to announce her cancer treatment through a video was so it could be more “personal”. During ITV News, presenter Charlene White mentioned about Princess Kates video disclosure: “It’s a moment she chose to do on video, which is very different from doing it in a written statement. What can we read into that? “.

In reply, Chris said: “If you look back to how the King revealed his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, it was in a statement from Buckingham Palace. Kate has done it, I am told, in a video form because she wanted to do it in the most personal way possible. Yes, of course, it helps to silence all the conspiracy theorists as well, but she wanted to do the video message and it was a very moving message too. And she wanted to make that very personal statement herself.”
