Beloved BBC presenter dies aged 91 as tributes flood in for ‘journalistic icon’

Legendary BBC presenter David Capper has sadly died aged 91.

The former BBC Ireland correspondent was on the airwaves during the height of the Troubles. He reported for BBC Northern Ireland’s Scene Around Six and covered some of the darkest times in the conflict, such as Bloody Sunday.

Adam Smyth, the Director of BBC NI described Capper as a “journalistic icon”. He said: “BBC Northern Ireland has lost a journalistic icon. David was the epitome of impartial and courageous reporting in the public interest.

“He was an eyewitness to some of the most harrowing events of The Troubles, including Bloody Sunday, and could be fully relied upon to provide a trusted account of what he saw”.

His tribute continued: “Many senior figures in local journalism also have David to thank for passing on his considerable skillset to junior reporters starting out in the industry. Our deepest condolences go to David’s family circle.”

The Belfast-native, who leaves behind three children, Chris, Diarmit and Samantha, worked with the BBC for 26 years. Capper’s career into journalism kicked off when he got a taste for news after working for the Newtownards Chronical. 

During his time at the publication, he got his first big break covering the Princess Victoria in 1953. It wasn’t until Falklands War in 1982 when Capper began his career with the BBC. He also reported on the Enniskillen bomb in 1987.

While in recent times, he had stepped away from journalism his heart remained in the media. Capper went on to help with advising on the development of radio stations aboard.

Former UTV Political Editor Ken Reid has also sent his condolences to David’s family. He said: “David Capper has died, aged 91. 

“A wonderful journalist who brought insight and integrity to the profession. Deepest sympathies to the family circle and friends.”

Writer and broadcaster Mike Philpott said: “So sorry to learn of the death of my old mentor and one of the greats of broadcast journalism, David Capper.”
