Big-money BBC show’s future in doubt after hotly-anticipated reboot saw ratings flop

Survivor is on the brink of being axed by the BBC, we can reveal.

Bosses have had secret talks about ditching the reality show after airing just one series of its reboot. They had last night pulled the application form for another series from its website.

An industry source said: “Survivor is pretty much doomed. The chances of it returning are very slim indeed. An official announcement is expected to happen within weeks.”

The reboot, hosted by Joel Dommett, inset, was a flop when it aired last autumn – 21 years after it was last on telly, on ITV. It cost the BBC an estimated £30m and was given a major publicity drive. But the moves failed and it pulled in low ratings with around 2.5m viewers.

Our source said: “The BBC did everything it could to make it a success.” A BBC spokesperson said: “No decision about the future of Survivor has been made.”

Other shows on the channel such as I Kissed A Girl and Race Across The World- are currently advertised on the Take Part website, even though their applications close far later than Survivor’s – which claimed it was until February 16.

The Survivor UK website now reads: “Applications/casting paused. As things stand, we are not processing or taking any further applications at this time.”

Host Joel has remained hopeful that his new version would get a second run but it’s not looking likely currently. Joe said: “Fingers crossed… there’s a lot of stuff that we would do slightly differently.

“Like with every first series, it’s hard, so I think a second series would be amazing. Everyone seems to really love it, so I’m excited that – hopefully – [we get to] do another one.”

The Take Part page issued a statement in December which read: “BBC One’s Survivor is actively casting for a potential second series and we are looking for a new wave of fearless castaways and strategic masterminds who would be interested in being considered for the chance to play the ultimate physical and psychological game.”
