Blackadder writer teases huge BBC show comeback 35 years after axe but has concerns

Blackadder fans have begged for the show to make a return for years.

And it looks like their wishes could come true, with writer, Ben Elton, debating a comeback. Between 1983 and 1989, Rowan Atkinson, starred as loveable antihero, Edmund Blackadder, with Tony Robinson earning the appreciation of the critics for his portrayal of Baldrick.

During an interview with Lorraine in April 2023, Tony gave his fans a glimmer of hope, as he teased a 40th-anniversary return. He said: “All I’m going to say is: everybody likes to celebrate a 40th anniversary, don’t they? So there must be some fresh way we can celebrate our 40th birthday, wouldn’t you think?”

And now, the 64-year-old writer admitted he’d love to put pen to paper with his old partner for a new storyline and possibly a theatrical version of the show. He told The Sun: “A Blackadder play, if Richard was keen on it, I’d be interested. Not an adaptation of episodes, it would be an original play.”

Ben Elton would love to write more Blackadder episodes

In an interview with The Sun, he explained why he desires to put Black Adder on the West End: “When I wrote Upstart Crow, I did three series and three Christmas specials for TV, which was a load of writing, but I’m proud of the fact I then did an original play.”

Blackadder hit screens last year for a Comic Relief special. Alas, while Tony returned as Baldrick, Rowan was nowhere to be seen.

Rowan Atkinson starred in Blackadder

During a promotional tour for the special, during an interview with the BBC, Gary Davies asked: “What’s happening on the telly show..? You were telling me something about Blackadder…?”

Richard said: “God, I’m really nervous about saying this, but…,” Gary chuckled: “It’s okay, no one’s listening!”

Black Adder could be making a return

The writer then explained: “For the first time in 20 years, Baldrick is going to be giving some kind of performance. We’re just conspiring about it now, so I think there’s going to be a marvellous, turnip-based thing with Tony Robinson now back in action, so I’m excited about that.”

Of course, the presenter had to ask whether Rowan would make an appearance for the Red Nose Day special. But to his dismay, Richard replied: “No. Rowan’s far too serious to do any of that! Things are looking up.”
