“By the time we landed in Stockholm he was zonked…
“We were met at the airport by our record company ‘minder’, a most pleasant young lady, who would be on hand to help.
“Russell proceeded to ask her for some ‘herrrn’. She looked most troubled and shocked and said she’d see what she could do.”
Nick, 58, said he and the band, fronted by Jarvis Cocker, had no idea of the alarm the mix-up had caused.
He continued: “We were all in stitches watching Russell in his altered state. He wandered off to his room and the rep admitted that if Russ needed some heroin, it would be very, very difficult in Stockholm, almost impossible.”
Nick, the nephew of late England World Cup winner Gordon Banks, shares this and other hilarious tales from the band’s heyday in his new book So It Started There.
He said of his pal’s Stockholm slip-up: “He confirmed later that he was really after some pickled herring, the Swedish fishy speciality.”
