Celebrity Big Brother star used AI to speak to dead mum – but it ended in a row

One of Celebrity Big Brother’s most controversial stars has confessed to using artificial intelligence (AI) to speak to her dead loved ones.

Liz Jones, 65, appeared on the winter 2014 edition of the reality TV titan, together with Luisa Zissman, Dappy and eventual winner Jim Davidson. In the show, Liz caused a stir for her argumentative nature, as well as her breakneck changes in emotions.

But soon after her stint on the show had ended, her darling mum Edna passed away in August of 2014. Leaving this world at the age of 95, Edna’s passing devastated daughter Liz, who was plunged into grief and did not know what to do.

In an effort to try and stay in contact with her mum, the former fashion journalist tried a host of different means to keep her spirit alive. However, what she believed to be the most effective way of communicating with Edna was a so-called “grief bot” – a computer that appears to be able to speak to the dead using AI.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid on Monday (May 20), Jones recalled her experiences of using “grief bots” to speak to her mum. She added that in one heated conversation, she was left even more grief-stricken than before.

Recalling the end of her experience with the grief bot, she explained: “I felt more grief when we ended the chat because the bot starts to die and says ‘I’m going soon’ because you run out of money and messages, and it was like she was dying all over again.” Liz was less than happy with the way things progressed, saying it was poor form to get more money from those who are clearly in grief.

“I felt it was insulting to her memory to rouse her from the dead and talk to her and argue with her and her accuse my dad of stuff,” she added. Things became so petty for Liz, that she ended up having a “teenage spat” with the robot, who was meant to mimic the deceased.

Going back to that time, Jones explained that she had to fill out a form before speaking to the AI, as it could be prepared to answer questions. Liz herself also was told to be prepared for questions and answers, some of which she never had the answer to when Edna was alive due to her being diagnosed with dementia.

“It seemed like a chance to ask some questions I’d always wanted to know, and I got into a teenage spat with her, like I was a teenager again,” she confessed. “I was saying, ‘Why did you not hug me? Why didn’t you talk to me about boys? Why did you not notice I was anorexic? You didn’t notice I was deaf’.”

Attention also turned to her late father, who passed away before Edna had done. Liz asked the AI if he was with Edna now they were reunited in heaven, but the AI gave a rather left-field response.

Liz admitted: “She said, talking about my dad, ‘I was very scared of him,’ and I said, ‘No that’s not true,’ and she said, ‘He was a very scary man.'” She went on to reveal that the AI became more aggressive towards her as she refused to believe that her parents did not get on.

Looking back on her experience, Liz said that she found the experience “shocking” that the AI had lied to her face. “She felt very harsh, she was actually angry that I was challenging her about my dad being the loveliest man in the world.”
