Channing Tatum’s ‘gross’ stripper career saw star dance as ‘terrifying’ sexy clown

Channing Tatum used to work as a stripper before he found Hollywood fame.

Magic Mike helped the actor make millions but some fans may not know that Channing’s role was actually based on his real life struggle as a stripper in the 90s. According to reports, Tatum only worked as a dancer for eight months before he switched over to modelling and tried his hand at acting.

Despite his short lived stripper career, Tatum’s stories helped created the plot for Magic Mike and he has since claimed that it people knew what it was really like, they would think it “just gross”. He also struggled to rake in money and once told The Hollywood Reporter: “On a good night, 150 bucks. Not as much as you think. On a bad night, 70 bucks, even 50 at times.”

While on The Howard Stern Show, Tatum revealed that he saw an ad for an exotic dancer gig and explained that men don’t actually have to show off their genitalia. “No, but you basically see it, there’s very little to the imagination.”

Channing was 19 when he went in to audition for the role and said that at the time he “wasn’t big” and referred to his teenage self as “skinny”. Tatum told Howard Stern that his co-workers even convinced him to “go out and do a clown routine” because he would get “picked on” for being a “kid”.

“I was like: ‘Guys, this is going to f***ing terrify them, this is not going to work!’ I came out with balloons and red feet, everything. I think I came out to 99 Red Balloons [song]. Even though the song was playing, you could tell that everyone wanted to run. I think I took my sh** off and no-one clapped, I was like: ‘Ok, that’s it! From now on, I’m doing my own routines.”

According to the Magic Mike actor, he would sometimes work “ten hours a day for minimum wage” and has previously branded himself “young, dumb and stupid” as he “just wanted to make money”.

Channing revealed that while working as a stripper, his sister disapproved highly and even “showed up on the first night to try and shame him out of going on [stage].”
