Coleen Rooney’s legal bill from the Rebekah Vardy Wagatha case has been exposed for the first time.
Her legal tab from the sensational Wagatha Christie libel clash with Rebekah has reportedly soared to over £1.8 million, the High Court heard. Rebekah, married to Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, was on the losing side of the courtroom drama in July 2022 after taking Coleen to court.
The dispute erupted when Wayne Rooney’s other half publicly fingered Rebekah for spilling her private deets to the tabloids on social media, which Mrs Justice Steyn ruled was “substantially true.”

Flashback to October 2022 and Rebekah was whacked with an order to cough up 90% of Coleen’s hefty legal fees, shelling out an initial £800k. Now, both WAGs’ legal teams have swooped back into a London court to hammer out the final bill, with Team Vardy claiming Rooney’s costs are a whopping £1,833,906.89.
This Monday, October 7, 2024, saw Jamie Carpenter KC, batting for Rebekah, revealing in written submissions that the bill includes a lawyer’s swanky stay at Nobu Hotel, complete with a hefty tab for dinner, drinks, and mini bar raids. “The costs dispute has been rendered particularly intractable by the sheer magnitude of the costs claimed by Mrs Rooney, in absolute terms and when compared to her agreed costs budget, the number of errors in the bill and the extraordinary nature of some of the costs claimed”, he blasted.
Jamie Carpenter slammed the bill as being “drawn without sufficient care” and taking a “a ‘kitchen sink’ approach.” He also highlighted that it included “over £120,000 of costs to which Mrs Rooney has no entitlement”. To add insult to injury, David Sherborne, Coleen Rooney’s barrister, was called out for racking up “total fees over the course of the proceedings of £497,850.”
The epic three-year libel clash kicked off when Coleen got wind that her private Instagram posts were being spilled to the press. She launched a crafty “sting operation” and pointed the finger at Rebekah for leaking juicy titbits about her personal life to the tabloids.
Coleen went public, accusing Rebekah’s account of being the snitch behind three Sun newspaper stories that were chock-full of bogus details she’d planted on her private Instagram. The fake news included a yarn about her jetting off to Mexico for a “gender selection” procedure, her supposed TV comeback, and a flood disaster in her basement.
Neither Coleen nor Rebekah showed faces at Monday’s hearing, which is set to wrap up this Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Amidst the legal turmoil, a source close to Rebekah saids: “they have been trying to pick her pockets because they think they can get away with it. They underestimated their costs and are over-billing her. From the costs of experts to legal fees, the figures are through the roof. They’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink at her and are after every penny they can squeeze out.”
Stuck with a defamation tab substantially fatter than the modest £540,000 tally she prepped for, mum-of-five Becky, aged 42, faces a financial headache.
