Coronation Street and Emmerdale fans fuming as soaps axed in huge schedule shake-up

Soap fans have been dealt another big blow as Coronation Street and Emmerdale have been replaced by the Euros.

Corrie and Emmerdale lovers didn’t get their fix on Monday (June 17) as ITV decided to swap the soaps for the Euros, showing Austria vs France instead. With the coverage kicking off at 7.15pm and wrapping up around 10.30pm, there’s no room for Weatherfield or the Dales.

But fans won’t be left hanging for too long. The soap giants will return with a bang on Tuesday with Emmerdale hitting screens at 7pm sharp, followed by Coronation Street at 8pm, both dishing out an hour of juicy storylines.

It’s no secret that ditching soaps for football tends to wind up viewers, sparking a fair bit of moaning on social media. Corrie execs have taken to social media to flag the change, posting: “The Euros are officially kicking off, which means that our schedules will be changing for a little while, including tonight as we’re not on.”

Corrie got axed from the ITV schedule on Monday (June 17)

They added: “Not a football fanatic? We’ll be keeping you up to date with information about when we’re on air.” But viewers still aired their frustrations on X.

One fan wrote, “@ITV Why can’t @ITV do what BBC have done. Football on BBC1 other popular programs ie Casualty they have put on BBC2 so those of us that hate football can watch our usual programs. You could do this with Emmerdale and Coronation Street.”

Another irate user vented: “So mad put all football on bbc1 leave us soap addicts alone x”. Another commented: “@ITV Please explain why the football coverage starts at 6.30pm but kick off isn’t until 8pm, you could easily have put both coronation street and Emmerdale on before the match starts! “.

One fan pointed out the amount of chat before the game, saying: “Not everyone wants to watch football and is it necessary to have an hour and a half of waffle?” A more pragmatic viewer suggested a solution: “Why can’t you upload the whole weeks episodes each Monday morning at 6am. Then we can watch it in our own time.”
