ITV bosses are reportedly under pressure at Coronation Street.
According to recent reports, a number of television executives have turned down the prestigious opportunity – leaving the soap’s top producers with a “huge headache”. The broadcaster has reportedly drafted in top drama exec Huw Kennair-Jones, who previously worked as an editor on The Archers, to sort out the mess.
Trying to solve the issue, Huw has approached several executives working at the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky. But it has been suggested that his efforts have failed to produce success as he hasn’t been able to entice anyone to run the show.

The new opening comes after Series Producer Iain McLeod left his role as Coronation Street’s boss for a bigger position at the broadcaster after six years last week. In the meantime, Iain’s wife and deputy on Corrie, Verity MacLeod, is filling in until they find someone new.
However staff at ITV have reportedly claimed that the situation is possibly putting off potential candidates because they don’t want to be working in between the married couple. Some have even branded the situation internally as the “MacLeod sandwich”.
A television insider told Daily Mail: “ITV have had conversations with a number of television executives who are currently working on other serial dramas or have in the past been at the helm of big shows. But no one wants to do it.”
The source also explained that potential suitors for the job won’t feel happy “answering to Iain while having his wife as your deputy.” They added: “It’s a ‘MacLeod sandwich’ that no one wants to be in the middle of and it’s now become even more of a headache for ITV.”
In the past few years, Corrie has come under fire from their loyal viewers. Fans complained that the ITV show, which has been running for an incredible 64 years has abandoned its loyal audience by showcasing an obsession with younger characters and illustrating many “unbelievable” plot lines.
Programme insiders have also alleged that there were a few complaints that series producer Iain, who joined the show in 2018, was there for too long. As it is a role that often has a new person take leadership every two-three years.
Last Wednesday’s visit to Coronation Street was watched by just 3.2 million. Last year the show missed out on the top 10 most watched TV programmes of Christmas Day with only 2.6 million tuning in, which was down eight million from a decade before. Daily Star has reached out to ITV for a comment.
