Coronation Street DS Swain star confirms character’s sexuality and is set to ‘find love’

Coronation Street favourite DS Swain is set to find love on the ITV cobbles as she investigates Lauren Bolton’s disappearance.

Over the past few weeks, fans have watched the blonde bombshell grow closer to Bobby Crawford with the pair even locking lips inside Roys Rolls. But things don’t stay happy for long in Soapland, as viewers found out last week.

The teenager suddenly vanished from the famous street, and it didn’t take long before her suitor raised his suspicions about her disappearance. DS Swain – played by Vicky Myers – is the first one on the scene and she swiftly starts her investigation on the ITV cobbles.

Now in an interview with Daily Star and other press, the soap star has revealed that throughout the investigation viewers will get to learn a little bit more about her stone-faced character. She told us: “We know that she has a teenage daughter and also, I’m not entirely sure everybody knows this, but she’s gay.”

When asked if her character could find love on the soap in the future, she replied: “So I think for Swain she perhaps has seen somebody that’s caught her eye. But at the moment she’s far too busy with focusing on this investigation.

“She’s focusing on her career and being a single mum and juggling her home life as well to her teenage daughter. We’re only just scratching the surface with Swaine and when I got the call that this was happening, it was the itch that I needed to scratch.”

The actor went on to share her hopes for her career-driven character and how viewers will get a glimpse behind her hard exterior in the coming weeks. Vicky went on: “I did my homework a couple of years ago and I wanted to build this character that portrays and embodies everything about the North and about Weatherfield.

“It’s almost in a matriarchal sense that she wants to continue going on in the career that she’s chosen. But I also [want to] display that she’s a single working mum and the stress and pressures that that creates and also the dynamic with a child.

“How does the child feel about all this? So for me, I’m so happy to be here.” Vicky went on to share her excitement for fans to see her character outside of a professional environment as a new permanent member of the street.

She continued: “I think you’d be hard pressed to find characters that she hasn’t either arrested, brought in for questioning or just had some kind of perhaps flippant remark to. But I think it’ll be interesting to see her outside of a professional environment and to find out exactly who this woman is. What she’s like behind closed doors.”

“So perhaps maybe in the future with new characters that are coming in [she may find love]. And also I’m excited to find out exactly what makes her tick, why she is the way that she is and to ask those questions.” Viewers will have to stay tuned to see what her character will uncover on the famous cobbles.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV1 or catch up on ITVX.
