Coronation Street star Sean Wilson’s feud with ITV bosses has taken another huge turn following his exit.
Earlier this summer, it was announced that the 59-year-old would be returning to the cobbles as Martin Platt after six years off-screen. The TV favourite was due to reappear on screen in October as part of the departure storyline of his character’s ex-wife, Gail Platt.
An initial announcement said Wilson was to start filming scenes on July 24, with a storyline featuring his onscreen son David (Jack P Shepherd). But last week, telly bosses confirmed the actor would no longer be returning to the soap due to “personal reasons”.

It has now been claimed that the actor reportedly had a falling out with TV bosses, claiming they were “rude” to him after returning to the show. It was later claimed that when he returned to the show, he was pulled into a team meeting which took an unexpected turn.
Sources say the actor was disappointed about not being included in Gail’s big exit storyline and has now “instructed” lawyers after being suddenly cut from the show. It was also reported that actress Helen Worth, 73, was excited for Sean to return to the show.
A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Never before has a departure been so sudden or secretive. He went to the boss’s office and didn’t return. It has been a huge shock to everybody.
“And it is so sad after all these years that he isn’t going to be in Helen’s final scenes – it is something that she really wanted to happen.” The outlet also claimed that “lawyers are involved.”
An ITV spokesperson said: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.” Sean first took on the role of Martin in the Manchester-based soap back in 1985.
His character quickly became known for his tumultuous relationship with the ITV icon. He eventually left the show in 2005 to pursue a new challenge as a cook.
After bidding farewell to the famous cobbles, he trained as a chef and later won awards with his Saddleworth Cheese Company. Loyal fans will remember when Sean returned to Corrie in 2018 for a brief stint, where his character said goodbye to his son David before he jetted off to New Zealand.
Gail and Martin were married for ten years on the show, although their relationship eventually ended in tears due to his affair. It comes after it was announced last month that Gail Platt will finally get a “happy ending” after actress Helen Worth announced her departure after 50 years on the show.
The iconic character, played by Helen, is set to leave the ITV soap later this year after she first strutted onto the street in 1974. Executive producer Iain MacLeod commented: “Gail won’t die.
“It didn’t feel like killing her off would be right. Gail’s exit is a brilliant story. I thought, ‘What do the viewers want to see?’ Gail has had a hard life.
“She had a difficult childhood and she had disastrous marriages. So, we thought what viewers really want is a happy ending for her, so that’s what we’re doing.”
