Coronation Street’s William Roache reveals longevity secrets as he ‘hopes to make centenarian’

Corrie legend William Roache, who’s been gracing our screens as Ken Barlow since 1960 has just inked a deal to keep him on the cobbles for another year.

Chatting with Alan Titchmarsh on a rerun of Love Your Weekend, the Guinness World Record holder for the longest-serving TV star spilled the beans on his secret to staying in the game. “Still going strong, and hope to make the centenarian,” he quipped. “That would be great.”

The telly veteran was quizzed by Alan on how he’s managed to keep the show on the road for so long. William’s answer?

“The secret is to enjoy yourself”, reports the Express.

He then dished out some pearls of wisdom about keeping chipper in your twilight years. “But, you know, there’s a collective consciousness about ageing, a lot of it is a belief system,” he mused.

He scoffed at the idea of slowing down post-60: “When you’re 60, you know, ‘Oh sit down, take it easy, aren’t you retiring yet?’ and all those things.

“No! Keep going! I’m doing a parachute jump in a few weeks’ time. You just do whatever you want to do, as long as you enjoy it, that’s the main thing.”

Alan piped up with the old adage, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” to which William heartily agreed: “Yes, absolutely.”

Despite hitting 92 this April, William, who celebrated entering his 10th decade back in 2022, has made it crystal clear on his birthday special that kicking back and taking it easy is not on his agenda.

“People will say, ‘When are you retiring?’ But then what happens? Whilst I can do it, and whilst they will have me, I have no intention of retiring,” he shared.

“I am so fortunate to work for an organisation that is happy to have me.

“For me, it’s really just the same as ever. Getting on with it, steady as you go. If you enjoy doing something, keep doing it.”
