Corrie icon Beverley Callard ‘investigated by HRMC over unpaid £100k tax bill’

Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard is reportedly under investigation by HMRC after her business was unable to pay a £100k tax bill.

Callard, 67, is best known for her role as the no-nonsense landlady of the Rovers on the ITV soap, Liz McDonald. But aside from her tenure on the cobbles, actress Beverley runs her own acting company, and is credited as being a director.

The company itself was said to be handling her pay after leaving the Street, but now has gone into voluntary liquidation. This came after the firm failed to pay an outstanding tax and VAT bill of £101,554.

Alongside the unpaid tax, Beverley and her husband Jon McEwan were not able to pay back an extra £114k in loans to fund the company, which was named JMBJ Limited. The firm has already gone into administration, with independent auditors looking into how the couple were unable to pay the loans back.

This was also confirmed by liquidators looking to find ways to bring the payable amount down. They also added that not a single penny of the debt had been paid back by the couple, who both act as directors.

Speaking to the Mirror about the case, the liquidators themselves said: “We carried out an initial review of the company’s affairs, including seeking information and explanations from the directors by means of questionnaires, making enquiries of the company’s accountants, examining company bank statements and other records. This initial assessment revealed matters that the liquidators considered merited further investigation in relation to the director’s loans.

“As a result, the liquidators have undertaken further reviews,” they continued. “They are making enquiries with the directors in relation to the outstanding balance owed.”

As well as this, the liquidators said that the couple had insufficient funds in order to pay back anyone who had loaned them cash at this stage. It is currently not known whether sufficient funds will be able to be given to their creditors.

This is not the first time a Coronation Street icon has had to cough up an eye-watering amount of money in order to settle an unpaid tax bill. Fellow iconic actor Bill Roache is in the grips of a legal battle to stop him from paying a massive £546k to the taxman.

Beverley, who starred in the show for 31 years as the loveable Liz, admitted that the time was right for to step away from the show when she did. Speaking on the How to Be 60 podcast last year, she explained that she had fallen out of love with the production of the show.

“I just felt that the scripts weren’t what they used to be,” she explained. “I’m trying to be diplomatic.”
