Coronation Street viewers could be in for a first-of-its-kind storyline involving the character Mason Radcliffe.
The notorious bully, portrayed by Luca Toolan, made his dramatic entrance to the cobbles last year, causing quite a stir. Audiences were left aghast as they witnessed him torment Maria Connor’s (played by Samia Longchambon) young son, Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall).
The plot took a chilling turn when Mason brandished a knife at Liam, pushing the youngster to contemplate suicide. However, in April, Mason was dispatched to a Young Offenders centre for his threatening behaviour towards Liam.
During the court proceedings, Dylan courageously confronted Mason, providing testimony against him. Yet, last month saw Mason return to the cobbles after being released from the Young Offenders centre, unsettling many, including Liam and Dylan.
In contrast, Stu Carpenter (Bill Fellows) has shown sympathy for Mason, even securing him employment at his restaurant, reports the Express. This news of Mason working at Speed Daal sparked outrage among several residents.
Despite this, Stu maintained that he could see Mason making efforts to reform. Mason has also formed a bond with mischief-maker Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin), daughter of DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers). However, this week sees Mason rebuff Betsy, asserting he has no interest in pursuing her. Now, fans are speculating that the soap is setting up a fresh storyline for Mason.
Corrie fans on Reddit are speculating like mad about the potential twist in Mason’s storyline. One eagle-eyed viewer theorised that he could be set to become Corrie’s first asexual character.
They wrote: “Do you think we’re heading for a coming out storyline? Or is he simply just not interested in her? Maybe he’ll eventually develop feelings and there’ll be a love triangle with Dylan. I know not everyone fancies everyone, but she does seem his type, unless he really does want to change and sees her as a bad influence.”
“A few people have suspected this, esp as he seems to (pretend to? ) be homophobic. He could even be aromantic/ asexual (I don’t think Corrie’s ever had an established one).”
Not stopping there, another theory was added by the fan: “Samia L (Maria) stated that something ‘big’ will happen later this year. Maybe it’s something similar to Lucas and Dillon.” Back in July, Samia Longchambon who plays Maria let slip to Inside Soap that something significant is in store for Mason later on.
Meanwhile, another poster shared their thoughts suggesting different turns for the storyline, writing: “It will probably be a homosexuality coming out storyline where he has feelings for Liam which will be super awkward and weird both in the show and as a viewer. But they SHOULD go for an asexuality storyline because it’s very underrepresented.”
A fan speculated: “Could the reason Mason is not interested in Betsy be because he is attracted to somebody else, like for instance, Liam? To me, it would explain, partly his bullying of Liam rather than getting too matey with him.”
Another enthused follower pondered: “If he was gay, there could be a storyline where Sean feels sorry for him and helps him come to terms with things.”
Meanwhile, one viewer shrugged off the idea of Mason getting heart-to-heart moments with Sean, if it turned out he was gay or asexual, saying: “Ugh, plausible as that is, I just groaned and wouldn’t that just be a kick in the head to Dylan, from his perspective anyway? Nothing surprises me about the writing anymore tbh.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
