Dakota Fanning has said that Tom Cruise has taken to buying her the same birthday gift ever year.
Dakota, 30, has been in the spotlight since a very young age, having found her acting chops early in her life. Throughout her career, she has starred in the likes of Charlotte’s Web, Coraline, The Equalizer and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
However, her big break came in 2005 when she starred alongside Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise in the blockbuster War of the Worlds. Playing her father, Tom and Dakota struck up an unlikely friendship that has continued to last until this day.

Speaking to Kelly Clarkson on her show on Wednesday (June 5), Fanning – who is currently promoting her latest film The Watchers – said that the pair first met whilst shooting for the movie. “I turned 11 on War of the Worlds when we worked together, and he gave me my first cellphone for that birthday – it was a Motorola Razr.”
Joking together with the American Idol star, Dakota admitted that at the time, she “didn’t have anyone to call”. However, she had declared that she had wanted the Razr “so bad” as they were one of the most popular mobile phones of the time.
“I must have been talking about it a lot,” Dakota said, “because that’s what he got me. It was such a great memory.”
And it seems the friendship has continued to blossom, as Tom continues to send her gifts for her birthday, according to Dakota. At the time, she confessed to the Hollywood legend that she was starting to grow into adult-sized shoes at the time of the press tour for War of the Worlds.
Fanning recalled how she used to be so excited that she could see herself grow, that Tom picked up on the joy. As a result, year after year, he sends her a pair of shoes to indulge in, with host Kelly in awe of Cruise’s generosity – even decades after they worked together.
Delighted at the admission, Kelly said: “I love it! You must have a massive shoe collection brought to you by Tom Cruise.”
Cruise has developed a habit of buying some odd gifts for good pals in recent years. For many years, Tom is known to send a coconut Bundt cake to friends and family during the festive period, to the point where it has been dubbed the “Tom Cruise cake”.
Actress Cobie Smulders, who is best known for playing Robin in How I Met Your Mother, sarcastically quipped that she always knows it is Christmas when the sweet treat arrived at her doorstep.
“I leave it in my freezer and it lasts until, like, March,” she joked in an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. “I just slowly chip away at this thing; it’s so good, I don’t know why.”
