“The clock ticks on, time makes its ravenous and not entirely welcome advances, and, so far as I can make out, not one of us has found a way to prevent it from doing so, with the sole exception of Cliff Richard.
“How does he do it? Cliff and I share a birth year, but I found myself quite close to him at a royal event not long ago, as you do, and I felt like I was being whisked off in the DeLorean from Back to the Future.
“The years seemed to be falling away from Cliff before my eyes. It was extremely impressive, and not a little envy-inducing.”
In his new book This Time Next Year, the actor – famous as Del Boy in Only Fools – said he feels like he is still in his forties.
He added: “Of course, I am aware of the theory that age is just a number – that you are only as old as you feel, etc.
“I am equally aware how, in my own case, your age can seem completely unreal to you – something you don’t really even believe.
“After a while, you start thinking, ‘How could I possibly be this old? When did this happen? Where have these high numbers suddenly come from? And why have I been sent somebody else’s birthday cards?’
“I know what the reality is, obviously, but very often it seems to bear no relation to the way I think of myself at all.
“I’m still somewhere in my early forties, if you were to ask me to put a figure on it – or certainly as long as I stay away from mirrors.
“Naturally, then, I make a very determined effort to stay away from mirrors.
“So, yes, to a degree I suppose age is indeed just a number – an attitude, a frame of mind.”
