Drew Barrymore’s co-star got erection during steamy scene – so he faked injury

Though it’s well known how unsexy it can be to film raunchy scenes, plenty of Hollywood stars have suffered embarrassing moments of arousal during these moments.

Michael Vartan is one of those people. The actor, 55, starred opposite Drew Barrymore in the 1999 romantic comedy Never Been Kissed. The 48-year-old played Josie Geller, an aspiring writer who posed as a high school student to study teen culture.

But things got complicated when the twentysomething fell for her teacher Sam Coulson, played by Vartan. In 2021, the star-studded cast reunited to revisit the film’s best moments.

It was at this moment Vartan made a confession about their infamous kissing scene. Explaining on The Drew Barrymore Show, he said: “So, I get up to the mound, we embrace and we start kissing, and you really kissed me. I mean, you really kissed me.”

He continued: “I was not ready for it in the least, and I’m a man, I was a very young man back then, and I had uh, feelings. The feelings were, they just happened, and I very quickly realised I was in a very bad spot because I was wearing very loose sort of like slacks and I thought, ‘This is going to be a disaster when they cut, I must pre-emptively end this’.”

To cover the embarrassing moment, the Monster-in-Law star admitted he made up a lie about injuring his back. Vartan went on: “So what I did, in a panic, I just yelled cut, and bent over and said, ‘Oh guys, sorry, my back, I put my back out playing ball.’

“Anyway, I went off into my corner and finally I was able to compose myself, and luckily the subsequent scenes went on without a hitch.” While fans got behind Josie and Sam’s romance, Vartan pointed out a major floor in the plot – the presumed age gap.

Speaking to Page Six in 2019, the star said: “I don’t know if someone who had a darker disposition at the time, maybe the creep factor would have intensified it a bit. But if I’m a 30-year-old man and I think this girl is 17, it’s completely inappropriate.”

Vartan questioned his character developing feelings for a teenager

Vartan tried to give his character the benefit of the doubt, however, adding: “I don’t think he lusted for her. It certainly wasn’t a physical thing. I mean, obviously she’s beautiful, but I think … he just sort of fell for her as a human being.”

The Alias alum went on: “He’s just really taken by her spirit and her soul and, you know, maybe deep down inside he felt like there’s no way this girl is 17, but on the surface, a teacher hitting on a student of any gender, for that matter, who is underage is completely inappropriate.”
