Drew Barrymore’s co-star Michael Vartan was so turned on by snogging the actress he had to fake a back injury and “think horrible thoughts” to get out of the awkward situation.
It all started while filming 1999 rom-com Never Been Kissed, which starred Vartan as love interest Sam Coulson and Barrymore as Josie Geller. The movie, which also stars David Arquette and John C. Reilly, follows a news reporter who enrols in high school to research a news story.
Things got difficult for Vartan towards the end of the film, when the co-stars had to share a passionate kiss. Vartan admitted at a cast reunion on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2021: “I gotta say, I haven’t seen that clip in years and standing there I got emotional.

“This movie’s been a huge part of my life, every time I’m stopped it’s always Never Been Kissed, so it’s a pretty amazing thing to be a part of and this reunion is just wonderful.” Drew wondered if a “particular memory” stood out for Michael, who confessed: “Yeah, there’s a story about the famous scene that very few people know about and I’m not sure I should… You do not know about it.”
But the star went on to admit of the baseball field scene: “So I get up to the mound, and we embrace and we start kissing and you really kissed me — I mean you really kissed me, I was not ready for it in the least. And I’m a man, I was a very young man back then and I had feelings, the feelings just happened and I very quickly realized I was in a very bad spot because I was wearing very loose, sort of slacks.
“I thought ‘This is going to be a disaster when they cut, I must preemptively end this,’ so what I did is in a panic I just yelled ‘Cut’ and bent over and said ‘Oh guys sorry my back, I put my back out playing ball.’ I went off into my corner and I was thinking horrible thoughts like you know ‘dead puppies, dead puppies, dead father, dead father’ and so finally I was able to compose myself and luckily the subsequent scenes went on without a hitch but that was — you were a very good kisser.”
Drew admitted she “went for” the kiss because Michael was single at the time, adding: “You know, you weren’t married at the time so yeah I went for it, because you were single and I felt like I wasn’t going to offend anybody. You did something that for me is the ultimate in romance with a kiss, which is when you put your hands on a woman’s face.”
For Drew, who has definitely not “never been kissed”, she recently admitted she’s a “dirty bird” and has “tried everything” in the bedroom. She admitted on her podcast in 2022: “I’m a dirty bird… but just in the corners of my mind where I never will tell and it’s just for me. I can understand certain kinky things. Listen, I’ve tried everything. I’ve done everything, that’s why I’m so boring now.”

She admitted: “I don’t know if I was into it or not – I just wanted to try everything.” She’s “fine in the bed” with missionary, but doesn’t have “all the energy in the world” as she did in her Charlie’s Angels days.
