Dune Part Two’s creepy kiss between uncle and nephew was never meant to happen

Austin Butler has shared some behind-the-scenes secrets about his smooch with Stellan Skarsgård.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Austin confirmed that their kiss in Dune: Part Two was improvised and said: “Oh yeah, [Stellan’s] game for anything. He’s the best…it’s always about how you’re trying to affect somebody else.”

In the film Butler plays the “psychotic” Feyd-Rautha, nephew of Skarsgård’s character Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. During one scene, the Baron gives his family member a promotion and after making the announcement, he reaches down close to Feyd-Rautha’s face to give him a kiss on the lips.

After pulling away, Feyd-Rautha reaches up and pulls his uncle’s face back in for another squirm-inducing smooch that would make any viewer uncomfortable. The crowd below begin to cheer after witnessing the Harkonnen relatives lock lips.

Butler is well-known for his role as Elvis in the 2022 Baz Luhrrman film, for which he managed to train his voice to sound like the rock n roll legend. The Hannah Montana actor told Screen Rant that he undertook vocal training in an attempt to sound more like the Swedish actor who plays his on-screen uncle.

He confessed: “It dawned on me that he would’ve grown up with the Baron and the Baron being the one who has the most power and how we end up soaking in through osmosis those traits of people that we grow up with, but particularly those that we admire in some way.”

Butler said that he worked with “the godfather of dialect coaches Tim Monich” who helped him “hone in” on Skarsgård’s voice in an attempt to slightly mimic his accent. Austin said that he put some thought into “figuring out how [Feyd-Rautha’s] childhood shapes him into who he becomes” and how “necessity for violence” means he is “able to survive”.

Dune: Part Two is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 sci-fi hit, starring Hollywood’s newest generation of actors including Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Anya Taylor Joy and Lea Seydoux.

The film, which is in cinemas now, continues the story of Paul Atreidis and his mother Jessica as the pair flee from Harkonnen forces, who aim to wipe out their bloodline along with the Fremen people.
