EastEnders and James Bond actress Pamela Salem dies as tributes pour in for star

EastEnders and James Bond actress Pamela Salem has died aged 80, it has been confirmed.

The actress is best known for playing Miss Moneypenny alongside Sean Connery in 007 spy movie Never Say Never Again in 1983 and she also appeared in EastEnders, Doctors Who, Into The Labyrinth, ER and The West Wing over her career in showbiz.

A spokesperson told Big Finish: “We are utterly heartbroken to confirm the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Pamela Salem.”

Following the sad news, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the star. One fan penned: “RIP Pamela Salem British actress who was in Doctor Who, Howard’s Way, French Fields, and EastEnders To a generation of children, she will be well known as Belor in the 1980’s HTV West kids drama Into The Labyrinth Pamela Fortunee Salem 22nd January 1944 – 21st February 2024.”

Another added: “Oh no, Pamela Salem, how sad.” A third social media user wrote: “RIP Pamela Salem … you were scary in Into the Labyrinth.”. Someone else said: “Oh no! Pamela Salem was such a wonderful actress. RIP #ClassicDoctorWho.” A fifth person typed: “Sad to hear of the passing of British actress Pamela Salem, Moneypenny from Never Say Never Again. I reckon it’d be fitting to remember this bow-tie wearer on #JimFanningFriday.”

Pamela was born in India in 1944 and trained as an actress at the Central School of Drama before starting repertory theatre in Chesterfield and York. She made the big move across to America in the 1990s. She was married to the fellow actor Michael O’Hagan and they lived together in Surfside, Florida until his death on in November 2017.

Her Big Finish producer David Richardson said: “Pamela Salem was lovely, and we all loved her. Whenever there was a Big Finish recording for her, she’d fly in from Miami on her own steam, without fuss or fanfare. She would appear at the studio armed with the warmest smiles, the biggest hugs and often presents. She was a very gentle person – always interested in everyone, from her co-stars to the production team to the guest actors and visitors. She talked with joy about her home on Miami Beach, waking up to warmth and waves.

“Pamela had an extraordinary career and carried it lightly. Every opportunity to work with her was a gift. We had many happy days together and I feel very lucky to have had her in my life.”
