EastEnders fans fume ‘there’s no thought’ as iconic character exits after 28 years

EastEnders fans fumed as they said goodbye to one major character.

It appears viewers could have seen the last of Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) as it was confirmed he wouldn’t be coming home. Ben was recently arrested and awaiting bail for fraud charges.

The crime took place when Ben spent a few weeks in America trying to find an alternative treatment for Lola (Danielle Harold), who was battling a brain tumour at the time. During Wednesday’s instalment (March 27) of the BBC soap, Ben was visited by Lexi and Jay (Jamie Borthwick).

Their visit didn’t go as planned as Ben confessed to stealing someone else’s money. Ben insisted he only did it because he wanted to give Lola a few more months, but this only infuriated Lexi.

She asked if Ben was blaming it on her late mum, but he insisted: “It’s all on me. I messed up.” Lexi said she wasn’t angry at her dad, but was “really disappointed”.

Lexi left Ben sobbing as she walked out the room after telling her dad he wasn’t good for her right now. Meanwhile Jay simply placed a hand on Ben’s shoulder before following Lexi out.

Later in the episode, Jay and Callum headed to Ben’s bail hearing. They were met with Ben’s lawyer, who passed on a message from him.

“He says to tell Lexi he loves her,” the lawyer said. She revealed that Ben was denied bail as he is deemed a “flight risk”.

When Callum asked if he could spend five minutes with his husband, she explained Ben had already been taken down to his cell. “I’m sorry Callum, Ben ain’t coming home.”

That could be the last time fans see Ben for a while, and they were not happy with his exit. Sharing their thoughts on X, one wrote: “Ben’s exit is about as equally disappointing as Rocky’s.”

Another fumed: “They’ve obviously put no thought into it whatsoever, Max Bowden clearly cared about EE so much and they give him THIS as an exit storyline? Anyway that’s the last reason for me to watch #EastEnders gone!”

“Ben killing Lewis and going to prison for it would have been a better more believable exit than this contrived nonsense. I said what I said,” agreed a third. Another added: “It’s because of the age old saying “if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all” that I’ve said nothing about #EastEnders in forever but omg I’m watching this week’s episodes and WHAT??? IS HAPPENING? This Ben exit storyline is such a crock of sh*t.”
