Emily Atack has addressed claims she is dating her family member.
The 34-year-old actress, who is in a relationship with nuclear scientist Alistair Garner, says the reaction to their relationship was “damaging” and greatly upset her family. She became a mum for the first time back in June after welcoming her son Barney James Garner with her new man.
The Inbetweeners star kept her pregnancy private for the first few months before going public with it. Emily and her boyfriend are thought to have known each other for decades through family connections – Emily’s famous mum, actress Kate Robbins, is sisters with Alistair’s step-mum Jane Garner.

It is only a relation by marriage, but Emily says the reports that she and Alistair were related that emerged were “very damaging”. She told The Guardian: “There were so many articles which were really hurtful, trying to make out there was something untoward about my relationship.

“There were headlines saying that I was dating my cousin, which is very damaging, very awful. We’re not related in any way.
“I think some family members found that very tough. It’s anger towards women. Men are so angry with sexy women. It’s like, ‘We’ll give you a little bit of power, but not too much. Here, you look nice on this front cover, but also, you’re a fat, ugly pig.'”

Alistair, who has worked as a lecturer, is a graduate of the University of Manchester, where he studied for his PhD. The University website states the doctor studied “Materials scientist and electron microscopist specialising in the degradation of high performance alloys for nuclear and aerospace applications”.
He is now believed to work at the sustainability company Jacobs, where he works as a Senior Consultant and Technical Lead for Core Materials. Emily was first linked to him in September 2023 when they were snapped walking together hand in hand in London.
It’s believed the pair enjoyed an afternoon of drinking. A source said at the time: “She had a cocktail and Alistair ordered a beer. Emily looked to be having a great time and couldn’t stop smiling. When they left they were holding hands.”

Before finding love with Alistair, Emily had said she was tired of flying the flag for single girls and sometimes cried herself to sleep as she was so lonely. Her exes are rumoured to include Harry Styles, McFly’s Dougie Poynter, Strictly’s Giovanni Pernice and footballer Jack Grealish –
Announcing her pregnancy this summer, Emily shared a photo of her bump and told her 1.8 million Instagram followers: “Hello everyone, it’s been a little while but I’m back with some news. I’m delighted to share with you all that we’re having a baby! I’ve never been so happy and utterly terrified at the same time. Please go easy on me.”
