Emmerdale actor ‘sad’ over soap ‘axe’ — but then lands huge new role in rival soap

A former Emmerdale star previously shared their “sadness” at getting written out – but they soon bagged a role in rival soap EastEnders.

Micah Balfour makes his debut on the BBC One soap this week as the estranged son of George Knight (Colin Salmon). In June last year, fans found out there was another member of the Knight family we had not yet met, Junior.

And with the recent shock death of his adoptive mum Gloria (Elizabeth Counsell) George recently reached out to Junior, despite the decade-long tension. And in episodes this week, George and Junior will come face-to-face.

But for actor Micah Balfour this is not his first soap appearance. As well as roles in The Bill, Doctor Who and Holby City, Micah once appeared in a rival show ITV’s Emmerdale.

Micah played village doctor Jermaine Bailey, who was the love interest of Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper). He made his first appearance in 2015 and quickly hit things off with Belle – despite being married.

The pair were even set to leave the Dales and move to Boston, after Jermaine bagged a fancy new job over there. But at the very last minute, Belle changed her mind.

And in 2016, Jermaine was written out. But for actor Micah, he once shared how he was “sad” over his soap exit. Addressing his exit on X, then known as Twitter, Micah even admitted his character wasn’t always the most popular on the soap.

He tweeted: “I know Jermaine wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea but I had a great time on #emmerdale! They made a fan out of me!” Micah then replied to a fan who shared their sadness over his departure from the Dales. Micah replied: “Me too.”

On getting the role of Junior in EastEnders, Micah said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of EastEnders as part of the Knight family. I grew up watching the show and many of the characters have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so walking onto the Square for the first time was the most surreal experience of my career!”

The actor added: “It’s a privilege to work with Colin Salmon, who I’ve watched with admiration for many years, and Francesca Henry and Molly Rainford, who are dynamite on screen, as well as the amazing Harriet Thorpe and Kellie Bright. Junior is an exciting character to play as he’s a complex man, and he’s going to cause a bit of a stir!”
