Eurovision hopeful Olly Alexander accused of ‘miming’ during ITV performance

Eurovision hopeful Olly Alexander has found himself under fire from ITV viewers who accused him of miming during what was dubbed a live performance at the weekend.

The Years & Years star appeared on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway to showcase his entry, Dizzy, for this year’s competition. The 33-year old penned the track with producer Danny L Harle – and will be hoping it fairs much better than Mae Muller’s song last year.

Ahead of the 2024 extravaganza, which takes place in Malmo, Sweden in May, talented Olly has described his number as the “feeling of such an intense swell of emotion” for that special somebody.

Following the broadcast, Ant and Dec took to Instagram to share a selfie with Ollie, in which they joked: “Feeling a bit dizzy after that one.”

Fans didn’t see the funny side, however, and instead angrily took to the comments to claim Olly had “lip synced”. One hit out: “Singing is supposed to be his job but he can’t do it live? Awful song.”

Another commented: “That song is awful. Nil points. Also, why couldn’t he sing live? That is supposed to be his job.” A third agreed: “If this is the song to represent the UK at the Eurovision contest, I think he should get himself ready for 0 points.”

A fourth wrote: “I thought he would be singing live ? Not lip syncing….” And a fifth said: “Disappointed that Olly wasn’t singing live.”

Olly was awarded his Eurovision opportunity in December and revealed the news during his live appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. “It’s going to be spectacular,” he said at the time. “It’s a dream come true – I’m just so, so excited.” He later added on the Eurovision YouTube channel: “I wrote the song last summer with Danny L Harle, we started off with the word ‘Dizzy’ because it just popped into my head and I liked it. I was thinking about fun things that could make you dizzy and I remember saying ‘dizzy from your kisses’ so we built the song around that.”

Olly continued: “Danny and I believe music should transport you somewhere magical and we wanted to describe this magical place in the song; a place of beautiful gardens, eternal flowers and time turning endlessly in an ecstatic loop. We took the feeling of Dizziness and put that into the production, so there’s a lot of undulating arpeggios, lilting harmonies and counter rhythms in the backing vocals.

“The song is about feeling such an intense swell of emotion for someone they totally turn your world upside down and inside out.”
