Eurovision winner Nemo suffers painful injury on-stage as they break thumb – and trophy

Eurovision winner Nemo broke both their thumb and the trophy after winning this year’s song contest.

The non-binary singer triumphed in Saturday night’s (May 11) grand final with their performance of The Code, amassing a whopping 591 points. But their victory performance didn’t quite go according to plan.

Nemo was holding the hefty glass trophy in one hand on stage after their win was announced. At one point they put it down and it seemed to fall over.

The singer seemed fine at the time but had their hand bandaged during the after-show press conference. According to reports, Nemo confirmed they had dropped the microphone-shaped accolade and ended up nursing an injured thumb too.

“I didn’t just break The Code I also broke the trophy,” Nemo joked. “I broke my thumb as well.”

Luckily, Eurovision bosses were able to rustle up a new trophy for the star, who was representing Switzerland in the contest. “So I technically have two now,” Nemo said.

The singer was the first non-binary artist to win Eurovision, and spoke of their pride during the press conference. “We need to talk with each other and I hope tonight can be a way of remembering that,” they said.

“I’m mostly just really grateful for this experience and all the friends I’ve made along the way,” they went on. “This was one of the most queer representations we’ve seen at Eurovision which was amazing, I want to shout out all the other queer artists this year.”

While Switzerland had plenty to celebrate, the UK didn’t fare so well. Its entry Olly Alexander was left around the middle of the leaderboard after the jury vote, with just 46 points.

There were hopes that the audience would like his performance of Dizzy a bit more and that it would push Olly further in the ranking. But when the public vote came in, the Years And Years star was sadly given the dreaded “nul points”. As a result, he ended up placing 18th out of 25 acts in this year’s contest.
