Over on TikTok, users have been making ‘fan edits’ of old clips of One Direction to pay an emotional homage to Liam. One video used One Direction’s 2015 song History as the soundtrack which instantly gave fans ‘chills’.
“These scenes from the History video will forever be hitting different now,” the poster wrote. They added: “This just feels unreal, rest in peace Liam Payne.
“It’s absolutely surreal.” In the comment section, fans shared their grief while listening to the song that has eerie nods to Liam’s untimely fate. One fan noted: “The fact Liam Payne is one of the composers of this song.”
On YouTube, people have been leaving comments under the music video that has racked up a huge 451million views. One said: “Listening to this song has always been so bittersweet, now it’s just bitter.” Another noted the lyric ‘we can live forever’ and said, “man I’m crying like never before.”
And this fan cried: “This video and song has a whole new meaning now.” As a fourth added: “Every words in this song hits different now.”
Here, we look at the five haunting lyrics from History that some are saying is the ‘universe’ foreshadowing Liam’s fate.
‘Make it out alive’
Liam’s solo verse in the song is the only one out of the four lads that mentions death. The verse reads: “All of the rumours, all of the fights. But we always find a way to make it out alive.”
Before Liam’s tragic passing he was embroiled in a legal fight with his ex Maya Henry. Just days before his death, Maya had instructed her legal team to send a cease and desist letter to Liam. She alleged that he was repeatedly contacting her and her loved ones.
The pair dated on and off for three years before calling it quits in May 2022. There have also been ‘rumours’ about Liam’s behaviour leading up to his death at the hotel in Bueno Aries.
Chillingly, the line “but we always find a way to make it out alive” is sung by Liam after the words about the ‘fights’.
‘Hotel rooms and new tattoos’
Singer Louis Tomlinson sings a lyric near to the end of the song mentioning “hotel rooms and new tattoos.” The full lyric is “minibars, expensive cars, hotel rooms and new tattoos, the good champagne, and private planes. But they don’t mean anything.”
It’s now common knowledge that Liam, who was known for his many tattoos, died falling from his hotel room while on holiday in Argentina.
Photographs claiming to show the interior of the suite Liam had checked into were originally published by Argentinian media outlets, including La Nacion and Clarin, just a few hours after his passing.
Allegedly taken inside Liam’s hotel room, the photos appear to depict remnants of white powder believed to be cocaine, burnt aluminium foil which could have been used as a ‘makeshift crack pipe’, a smashed TV and a flute of champagne.
His last moments and the presumed lifestyle his was living is echoed in the lyrics of History.
Previously opening up about his mental health struggles, an interview Liam claimed that minders would ‘lock’ the lads in separate rooms to keep tabs on them during the height of the One Direction fame.
Liam shared: “The problem we had in the and I don’t blame anybody for this, I don’t want to seem like I’m whining and moaning. ‘Oh my God look at my life’ whatever. When we were in the band the best way to secure us because of how big it got was just lock us in our rooms.
He chillingly admitted: “And of course, what’s in the room? A mini-bar. That’s almost nearly killed me a couple of times.”
‘We can live forever’
History hauntingly repeats the line ‘we can live forever’ numerous times throughout the three minute fifteen second track. The foursome (Zayn had left the band at this point) passionately repeated the line as video footage played showing their five years together.
The song was released the same year One Direction decided to disband and fans hoped the ‘we can live forever’ line was a hint that they would eventually get back together.
But, now fans have emotionally said the ‘song has a whole new meaning’ after Liam’s death.
‘Don’t let me go’
During the end moments of the song Harry Styles sings, ‘so don’t let me go, so don’t let me go – we can live forever’.
In part of the song where it appears to be constructed to seem like Harry is pleading at his late-bandmate, Liam then hauntingly reels off the words, “baby, don’t you know, baby, don’t you know.”
And sings the last line with his bandmates, “we can live forever.”
Harry Styles released a statement regarding Liam’s death and admitted he is “truly devastated.” To his Instagram fans, Harry wrote: “I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing.
“His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it. Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving.
“The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always…”
‘This is not the end’
Many are still digesting the awful news of Liam’s passing – and many fans have found the death of the star hard to believe.
“This can’t be real,” one fan pleaded on social media. While others chimed in with their disbelief that Liam is no longer with us.
The song ‘History’ has always thought to be about the band’s breakup but these lyrics have sadly mirrored Liam’s fate.
On the track, Louis Tomlinson sung: “Cause the truth is out, I realise that without you here, life is just a lie
“This is not the end, this is not the end.”
