Former BBC worker sentenced after being found with 58,000 child abuse images

A shamed former BBC employee has been sentenced after being found with 58,000 perverse images of children in a harrowing discovery by the National Crime Agency.

David Mundy, 85, was arrested on April 13, 2022, following a failed attempt to download sickening illegal content. The shocking investigation unveiled that Mundy had spent two decades indulging his disgusting perversion by hoarding depraved photos on various storage devices, ranging from floppy discs and CDs to USB sticks and hard-drives.

The agencies confiscated an alarming total of 47 digital storage devices in a raid on Mundy’s property. Of this haul, 31 contained images of child exploitation, with many chillingly labelled with inscriptions suggesting their vile contents.

This horrifying content revealed Mundy’s terrifying interest in illicit materials featuring children as young as six-years-old. Although most targeted boys aged between eight and fifteen years old.

The man used a peer-to-peer sharing system to acquire the illicit material, claiming he didn’t interact with other group members. At his residence, NCA officers discovered non-digital evidence of Mundy’s crimes, including a 15-page double-sided booklet titled “sensitive content movies” categorised by keywords, and several guides on navigating the dark web and maintaining online anonymity.

However he insisted he hadn’t utilised them yet. Mundy was charged in the subsequent year with three offences related to indecent images of children. During his interview, Mundy confessed to first viewing sexual images of children shortly before retiring from the BBC in 1998. Claiming uncertainty about the definition of abuse, he contended that his interest was solely “in pleasure”. Nearly 2,500 images found on his devices were category A, the most severe.

Mundy pleaded guilty to all three charges. On April 29 2024, he received a 10-month prison sentence at Guildford Crown Court. Adam Priestley, NCA Senior Manager, stated: “Despite clear evidence showing the scale of his offending, and the horrific nature of the content he repeatedly accessed, Mundy told officers that the images he had saved simply showed kids enjoying themselves. This could not be further from the truth.

“Behind each image is a vulnerable child who has been violated and abused for the benefit of offenders like Mundy. We at the NCA are committed to protecting children and ensuring that individuals who collect this material, creating a demand for abuse content, are held to account.” Mundy now finds his name tarnished by being placed on the sexual offender’s register for the next decade. The former BBC employee previously worked as a sound engineer.
