Francesca Bridgerton ‘confirmed’ gay as gender-swap role sparks same sex romance

Bridgerton season three has thrown the whole storyline into chaos.

Some of the storylines haven’t stuck to what happens in the book series, including a plot involving Francesca Bridgerton and John Stirling. Episode eight of the new season has caused a stir among the cast as new character Michaela Stirling is introduced.

During the third season Francesca has taken a notably longer time finding a match. She married John but still speaks about getting to “know herself better” amid their relationship.

Michaela Stirling, John’s cousin, is later introduced to the unsure Bridgerton sister and it is clear from the get go that Francesca is smitten. When greeting her for the first time, Francesca fumbles and is clearly shy in front of her husband’s cousin.

From this point onwards, the Netflix show changes the narrative from two straight relationships to Francesca entering a relationship with a woman. In the books, Michaela is actually a man named Michael.

Bosses haven’t openly labelled Francesca’s sexuality but showrunner Jess Brownell has addressed the situation and spoken out about the gender swap. She told Glamour: “So the first time I read When He Was Wicked, which is Francesca’s book, I really related to is as a queer woman.”

“Her book talks a lot about how different she feels and I think Julia Quinn’s intention in the book is just that Fran feels different because she’s introverted, but for many of us in the queer community that sense of feeling different is a part of our stories.”

Brownell continued: “I felt like there was fertile ground thematically in her book to nod toward telling a queer story. There are also some elements of her story that allow us to make sure we can tell a pretty happy ending for Francesca and Michaela.”

Jess said “it was important” to be able to give the characters a “happily ever after,” as they have “with every couple”. Bronwell assured fans that Francesca’s “future queerness” will not “negate what she has with John”.
