Now, the dynamic duo are getting the gang back together again five years on for the final ever episode which is set to hit our screens on Christmas Day. With filming wrapped for the festive special, Daily Star has taken a deep dive inside the author’s love life as she celebrates her 58th birthday with her nearest and dearest.
The TV favourite is notoriously private about her personal life. But over the years, the actor has slowly shared some parts of her life with fans, often through her novels.
The actress first met her husband David Peet more than two decades ago, reports the Mirror. But at the time he was reportedly happily married with three teenage children.
It is understood that their paths first crossed while working on a BBC comedy pilot together. It didn’t take long before sparks flew between then, with David later leaving his wife to start a relationship with Ruth.
The happy couple has been together ever since and now share a home together in the heart of Cardiff. While promoting her novel Never Greener in 2018, Ruth confessed that she and David did have an affair.
She insisted at the time: “Nobody in the book is based on anybody in my life. Of course you have to ask, but my imagination is quite ferocious, in that I can imagine the worst possible scenarios.”
She also acknowledged the pain caused by affairs, stating: “Affairs cause a lot of pain, they’re not something one aspires to do. You don’t aspire to cause pain to people in their life.”
Her novel tells the story of an actress who has an affair with a married man, but Ruth was adamant that it wasn’t based on her own life. But it wasn’t always plain sailing for the two love birds.
The early stages of her romance with David seem to have been as tumultuous as her on-screen love affair with Smithy in Gavin and Stacey. But years on from their rocky start, Ruth revealed that she has settled into their loving family lifestyle.
She confessed how much she enjoys being a stepmother to David’s three children. The star once stated that she’d experienced “all the joy of motherhood without the pain of childbirth”.
Despite her fame, Ruth confessed that she rarely mingles in the celebrity circuit, admitting she feels much more comfortable jogging in Cardiff’s park and doing her grocery shopping at her local Tesco.
