Richard Madeley has caused an outrage from Good Morning Britain viewers after he broke a camera while sticking it in a guest’s mouth.
Madeley, 67, returned to present the ITV morning show on Wednesday (April 24) alongside regular co-host Susanna Reid. As they ran through the main stories of the day, one of the main issues the pair touched on was the lack of NHS dentists that are available for patients.
To discuss the seriousness of the epidemic, Susanna and Richard were able to speak to Jamie Totterdell, a man who was forced to extract his own teeth with pliers. They were also joined by Eddie Crouch, the Chair of the British Dental Association.

Speaking to Jamie, both Susanna and Richard looked on in horror as Totterdell explained his predicament and how there have been no NHS dentists for him to visit. He also explained that the pain he feels gets so bad that at times he has to resort to pulling his own teeth out.
Totterdell also explained that following these DIY extractions, he has been left unable to use his mouth properly to chew. At one point, he also revealed that he was forced to go to the emergency department to be seen by a dentist to remove the remnants of a tooth he had pulled out himself, but this was only done because it was an emergency.
Following this, host Richard told viewers that he had a small camera that he would put in Jamie’s mouth to give viewers a sense of how bad his teeth were. However, as he tried to stick the camera into the guest’s mouth, producers had told him that the small device was not working.
Bemused, he said: “Oh, the camera’s broken!” as Susanna quipped: “Oh, what a relief! Oh, sorry – what a shame!”
Madeley asked producers on-air: “Is it not working at all?” After feeding the information to Richard through his in-ear, he seemed particularly upset by the news, saying: “No? Oh no, what a shame – it worked in rehearsals!”
Perhaps unluckily for viewers, GMB bosses were able to record the rehearsal and fans were able to see the self-described “mess” of Jamie’s teeth. However, much of the viewers’ anger turned towards host Richard as they questioned why he would put the camera in Totterdell’s mouth in the first place.
One fan watching the show blasted: “Ewww, I was glad that camera wasn’t working – then they pulled out footage from earlier!” A second account added: “We can take the guy at his word that he is missing teeth – no need for [Alan] Patridge to shove a broken camera right in his mouth!”
A third user slammed the presenter: “Alright Richard, bloody hell! Okay, the guy has agreed to show them but he must feel so self-conscious and that felt really awkward too. There was no need for us to see that.”
Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
