Kate Garraway raised some hackles while enjoying a lavish Emirates flight – despite being £800,000 in debt.
The Good Morning Britain star recently lost her husband Derek Draper after a long battle with Covid-19 that left him in a coma for a year. Caring for Derek left her family in a deep financial strain after covering costs like carers and adapting the house for his wheelchair.
Now Kate has headed abroad to film a new project, and shared snaps to Instagram from what looked like business class. She wrote alongside the post: “Just landed back home after an amazing week filming – meeting some truly inspirational people (can reveal all in September). Every flight that lands safely is a good flight by me!

“But this was exceptional. Despite storms internationally and delays the staff were calm and kind and managed to look as fresh as these flowers – even on landing. I am more resembling pot pouri but feel great!!! Thanks @emirates. #ItsTheLittleBigThings #kind #gratitude #PureClass.”
Kate’s snap included a pink bouquet of flowers in the upstairs section of an Emirates plane, with a flight map visible underneath. Sadly, however, the post garnered some criticism from trolls, who hit out at the expense.
But fans were quick to point out that it likely wasn’t even Kate footing the bill for the flight, but whichever network she’s working for. One said: “Kate is a journalist, that’s her job, that’s how she earns money to support her family. Why do people feel it necessary to criticise her? Is she supposed to hibernate, give up her job?”
Someone else said: “Some people are just vile! She’s a working mum with 2 children to raise. What is she supposed to do. Work is probably her way of dealing with her loss. I know mine was when I lost my husband of 34 years. In my prayers Kate.”
As a third followed up: “Why do these saddos follow Kate making nasty comments? Why watch the programmes? To be nosy I imagine. Lovely lady Kate keep your head up high and block the trolls.”
Kate has been candid about her financial issues, admitting his around-the-clock treatment cost a staggering £16,000 a month. Despite Kate making anywhere from £500,000 to £800,000 per year, the situation still left her in debt after forking out for her mortgage and bills.

She opened up about her financial woes in her final Derek documentary, ITV’s Derek’s Story. She previously followed his Covid-19 journey in Caring for Derek and Finding Derek in 2021 and 2022.
She said on the documentary: “Derek’s care costs more than my salary for my TV, and that’s before you’ve paid for a mortgage, before you’ve paid for any household bills, before you’ve paid for kids – so, we are at a crunch point. I am in debt and I can’t earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek’s care.
“I can’t even use the money I do have to support Derek’s recovery, because it’s going on the basics all the time. I’m not going to pretend by the way that I am poorly paid, I have an incredible job that I love that is well paid, but it’s not enough.”
