Good Morning Britain turned tense on Tuesday morning (May 21) after Richard Madeley made a sly dig about his co-star.
Madeley 68, returned once again to host the ITV morning show together with Susanna Reid, 53. The pair took the helm of the programme and guided viewers the main stories hitting the headlines that day.
As news bulletin host Ranvir Singh, 46, delivered the rest of the day’s news, a thought had run into Reid’s mind. In order to bring the topic up, Reid patiently waited for Ranvir to finish the bulletin, before confessing to her shock revelation.

Singh threw control of the show back to Reid and Madeley, as Reid began thinking out loud. “Can I mention something that I found out yesterday?” Susanna began.
“Water bottles – sorry, this only just occurred to me during the water story. Water bottles – when you unscrew them, do you notice that you have to keep going and then you have to pull off the top,” Susanna added, gesturing at the effort she has to spend in order to twist the cap off the plastic bottle.
Madeley already understood her gripe, however, as he interjected: “Because the tops are tagged and it’s still attached, yeah. It’s not just water bottles, orange bottles as well and fizzy drink bottles too!”
Susanna, whose mind had seemingly been blown by the concept, turned to weather presenter Laura Tobin for an explanation why. Tobin, 42, was able to give Reid – as well as viewers at home – the real reason why plastic bottles have become tethered, for a green reason.
“First of all, you’ll remember a few years ago, it was harder to open the bottle because the lid was smaller – to reduce the plastic,” Laura explained. “But now, people are just not recycling the lid and they’re being thrown away.
“So, this is a measure to keep the lid attached to the bottle, so you can recycle it together,” she added. Richard and Susanna were stunned at the idea, with the pair left in disbelief at the ingenuity of the scheme.
Richard was quick to give his assessment, chiming in: “I thought it was the fault of the manufacturer, I thought that those who were making the bottles were getting it wrong!”
As Madeley and Reid tried to bring the conversation back to the news, Tobin gave viewers a better suggestion to avoid having to deal with the tethered bottle tops. “Don’t use single-use plastic bottles; just use a water bottle and refill it every day.”
However, despite Laura’s sage advice to reduce people’s environmental impacts, Richard was not impressed with the weather presenter’s recommendation. “You had to have the last word, didn’t you?” Richard sounded off, to which Tobin cheekily replied: “No, I didn’t!” before bursting into laughter.
Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
