Gok Wan recalls working with huge girl band but ‘f***ed up’ after major blunder

Gok Wan is well-known in the fashion industry but before he broke into the TV world he worked with some big names.

The style guru once worked with girl band All Saints during their ‘Rock Steady’ era. In 2006, the group released their new track for their resurgence to the charts, which they changed up their style for.

Gok was the right person for the job as he kitted the girls out in impressive numbers for their new single launch. But when they first met one another, it didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

He explained: “I was always a massive All Saints fan when I was growing up, I loved them. They were the cool girl band and exactly in my age gap era.

“And so when I got asked called in by the girls to be their stylists to relaunch them, it was a massive privilege but so scary. So unbelievably scary.

“They loved their little tanks and oversized combats. They brought sportswear into pop music.

“But when I met them, I massively f***** up basically when I burled into the studio, fell over into Nicole’s lap, and they still booked me.

“Working with the girls was such an amazing moment because they all have such massive personalities. They all wanted something completely different but there was a uniform as well because they were a girl band.”

In other news, Gok had been working with retailer JD Williams on their new mid-life campaign. Talking about the new project he said: “I’ve been working with JD Williams this year, which has been a match made in heaven. They asked me to come on board for their midlife campaign, but midlife had a very positive way.

“When we often think about midlife, we think of midlife crisis, we go midlife terror. But actually, it’s not about that. It’s about embracing your experiences, the wisdom that you found over the years getting to know your body, getting to know your clothing, your style.

They loved working together on the campaign

“I got to work with Judi Love who we know is a great comic and this woman and Helen Skelton who of course is from Country File and Blue Peter. I got the opportunity to dress them and talk to them about juggling careers and children and being on screen being on stage and just what it feels like to dress yourself.

“It was a fun super campaign that resonated very well with the audience and a lot of people not only existing JD Williams customers, but also hopefully new customers as well.”

JDWilliams.co.uk has partnered with TV personalities Judi Love, Gok Wan and Helen Skelton as part of a new campaign aimed at challenging misconceptions surrounding midlife women and celebrating their relevance, roles, and individuality. This collaboration introduces two distinct edits curated by fashion expert Gok, tailored specifically for Judi and Helen based on their unique styles, body shapes, and personalities. Each item of clothing is available online now in sizes 8 to 32.
