“The kids have been playing in their curtains in the water with Maria, Dad comes back with the Baroness from Vienna, he’s cross and makes them all line up, blows his whistle, sacks Maria, they go into the living-room and then they sing The Sound Of Music in harmony and he joins in.

“It’s the first moment music has come back into the house since the death of his wife and he knows that was Maria.

“She has brought joy and music back and he can’t believe he sacked her. That is the epiphany moment of the whole film. I cry every time. It’s so moving.”

He added: “I’ve also cried in Antiques Roadshow and actually even in One Man And His Dog.

“The point when in One Man And His Dog they give the command and the dog delivers, you think, ‘Man and dog… it’s so moving.’”
