The Nightmare Before Christmas is Disney’s darkest film.
The 1993 musical tells the story of Jack Skellington, King of Halloweentown, who stumbles across Christmas Town and begins to scheme about how he can take over the wholesome family holiday for himself.
Along with Jack, who is a tall, spindly skeleton creature, the residents of Halloweentown are equally as freaky – his girlfriend Sally is a Frankenstein’s monster creation made by a terrifying mad scientist, the town’s mayor is a literal two faced monster, the evil Oogie Boogie is a giant sack filled with creepy crawlies and there’s even a faceless clown in the mix.

To celebrate 31 years since the film’s release, Daily Star is taking a look at the wildest theories about how the horrifying monsters in Halloweentown really died.
Fans seem to think that Jack was burned to death, as at the start of the film he placed a fire torch in his mouth. This one seems to check out as his hair and skin would have burned off, leaving only bone behind.
According to the fan theory, Sally was sadly dismembered which is heavily hinted at through her character design. She is covered in stitches and staples, and her limbs fall off multiple times throughout The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Lock, Shock and Barrel are three trick-or-treaters that get up to all sorts of mischief throughout the film and viewers are convinced they know how each of the children died. Lock is suspected to have been frozen due to his blue lips and pale face, while Shock is thought to have been electrocuted because of her wiry black hair.
Barrel’s name is slightly more literal, as fans think he drowned in a barrel because of his bloated shape and sickly green complexion. The kids all report to the ghastly Oogie Boogie, who is made of burlap stuffed with insects.
At one point in the film he splits open, which has led some fans to theorise that the villain was once skinned alive and eaten by the creepy crawlies…gross. Zero is the Pumpkin King’s loyal pet dog with a ghostly, smoke-like appearance and a lightbulb nose.
This has led many fans to believe that Zero was electrocuted – maybe he accidentally started the fire that killed his owner Jack Skellington?
