Henry Cavill is no stranger to on-screen sex scenes having worked in the film industry since starring in 2001’s Laguna.
His first prominent role saw him join The Tudors six years later, where he played Charles Brandon, the 1st Duke of Suffolk. It was during a three-year period on the show that he got to grips with getting steamy on the box – as his character enjoyed the company of several female members of the cast.
As well as his acting skills, his hunky physique has also contributed to the roles he later attracted – most notably as Superman in the DC Universe series of movies, and The Wicther’s Geralt of Rivia. But whilst getting raunchy on camera may seem an attractive proposition to many, it appears Henry isn’t particularly keen.

Now, as Henry celebrates his 41st birthday on Monday (May 5) we take a look back at his on-screen sex life and associated confessions from throughout his career.
Keeping in shape with sex
Henry previously hinted that sex is the best cardio workout for getting into shape to play Superman – but revealed he refused to don his Man of Steel cape when doing the deed with his partner. Asked by Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show how he keeps fit to play the buff superhero, he initially said “I run. That’s the savoury answer.”
But pressed further by host Jimmy for the “real” answer, he quipped in response to the audience’s laughter: “I think they get it!” before admitting he tries to burn a lot of calories in the bedroom.
Opening up more about his fitness regime, he confessed: “Generally off movies I tend to be off-season. I put weight on and then lose it again before we start shooting.”
Erection apology
Henry was forced to apologise once after becoming a little over-excited when filming a raunchy sex scene. From 2007 to 2010 he played Charles Brandon in period drama, The Tudors.
During that time it appeared things took an awkward turn on set when he had to record a scene with a woman he described as having “spectacular breasts”. Speaking to Men’s Fitness in 2015, he was quizzed if he was quizzed on the matter, confessing: “It’s only happened to me once, and it was very embarrassing.”
He continued: “A girl had to be on top of me, she had spectacular breasts, and I hadn’t rearranged my… stuff into a harmless position. She’s basically rubbing herself all over me and, um, it got a bit hard. I had to apologise profusely afterwards. It’s not great when you’re in a professional acting environment and somebody gets a b*ner, is it? No, not acceptable.”
Henry then noted how sex scenes are “acutely uncomfortable” and “not actually sexy”. He said: “The actual physicality is very uncomfortable. All you’re doing is smacking your nuts against someone, and nothing is going in.”
‘Not a fan’
Earlier this year Henry admitted he “doesn’t understand” sex scenes, adding that he’s actually “not a fan” despite several steamy performances in the past. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast alongside Argylle director Matthew Vaughn, Henry said that such raunchiness “only benefits the audience” rather than the plot of the movie itself.
“There are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience… [but] I think sometimes they’re overused these days,” he explained. “It’s when you have a sense that you’re going, ‘Is this really necessary, or is it just people with less clothing on?'”
He continued his rant: “That’s when you start to get more uncomfortable and you’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here. There’s not a piece which is going to carry through to the rest of the movie’.”
He’s not dead set against the idea, however, as he went on to confess sex scenes can in fact “be great in a movie” and “really help with the storytelling”. But the hunk explained: “Most of the time, human imagination is gonna trump it. And so I think it can be a little bit of a cop-out if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies and you’re going, ‘Okay, but what is this doing for us apart from the idea of, ‘Oh, naked person, great’?”
French kissing faux pas
More than a decade ago Henry declared that kissing one of his former co-stars with tongues was “too much” in another candid sex scene confession. The star had to snog Amy Adams for the 2013 Man of Steel movie, and the pair discussed the subject on The Graham Norton show while promoting the film.
Asked about her “really specific” kissing technique from her director when she was working on The Fighter, Amy said she learned to put her tongue on display in snogging scenes – and decided to carry that over to her next project.
She explained: “David O. Russell has a thing with tongue, okay? He likes to see it, like a 1980s music video or something. I tried that with Henry, it didn’t work! They were like, ‘Ew, what’s that?'” Henry then chimed in to admit it was simply “too much” as Amy joked: “I was such a creeper for poor Henry.”
She went on: “Like I know it’s all you know, but I talked to other people like,’‘Oh, Henry is beautiful, he’s such a nice guy’, but then you say it in front of him and then you feel really creepy.” Henry then jokingly moved a few inches away from his co-star on the show’s sofas.
Uncomfortable being watched
Later on the same show Henry declared that he feels “uncomfortable on set when being watched in the bedroom by a group of men. “When you think of it, when you’re having sex with someone you’re normally alone!” he began.
“When you’re on set, you’ve got at least 12 really very heavily set men watching you and it’s not comfortable, and things aren’t happening as naturally as they should. You know, there’s a lot of this [thumping].”
