Hidden Netflix horror film so scary people can’t finish it – and it’s getting a sequel

Netflix viewers are buzzing over a spine-tingling found-footage horror flick that’s been called one of the “most disturbing” watches ever.

Searching the streaming service for a proper thrill can be a headache, but this under-the-radar gem is causing quite the stir. The plot circles around a mum trying to patch things up with her daughter after a spell in foster care, following a murky incident from her past.

The blurb goes: “Six years ago, Li Ronan was cursed after breaking a religious taboo. Now, she must protect her daughter from the consequences of her actions.”

It follows the story of a mother who rekindles with the child she had to put into foster care

The duo’s shot at a fresh start is complicated by eerie hauntings, pushing Ronan to dredge up her old demons to keep her child safe, with the horror further ramped up by some interactive scenes which require the audience’s input.

Incantation bagged the title of Taiwan’s highest-grossing horror film in 2022, and dropped onto Netflix in July of that year. This led TikTok user @notjustbored_ to dare their followers to watch it without wimping out clocking in a staggering 13 million views and stacks of comments like “I could barely even finish it” and “I got jump scared so hard I dropped my phone”, reports the Manchester Evening News.

One viewer described it as “hands down… the most disturbing movie that I’ve ever seen,” while another claimed it led to them having “a sleepless night.”

Incantation’s director, Kevin Ko, revealed that the plot was inspired by internet phenomena like email chain letters and forum threads. A follow-up to the film is currently in development, set to pick up where the first one ended. Spoiler alert: if you haven’t watched the first one yet, you might want to skip the next part.

During a press conference in July 2022, Ko announced: “I am in the planning stage for the sequel of Incantation. I always want to make the films about children, so the sequel will focus on the surviving kid, Duo Duo, and what the story will happen, so yes, there’s a second movie coming up afterwards.”

Incantation is available to stream now on Netflix
