Hollyoaks icon lands ‘dream job’ as she moves to rival soap Corrie in huge shake-up

A Hollyoaks icon is joining Coronation Street.

Gemma Merna shot to fame in 2006 when she landed the role of Carmel McQueen on the Channel 4 soap. But the actress is swapping Hollyoaks Village for Weatherfield as she has joined the cast of Corrie.

The 40-year-old revealed she will be playing Rebecca who will be introduced as a love interest for Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson). Gemma shared the exciting news with fans on Instagram, branding it her “dream job”.

Alongside a snap of her posing outside of the Rovers Return pub, Gemma wrote: “The news is out. I’ve been keeping a little secret. I am thrilled to announce that I’ve landed my dream job on @coronationstreet!”

The TV star continued: “Can you believe it? ! I’ve wanted to be on Coronation Street since I was a little girl. Being born and bred in Manchester, it’s truly a dream come true for me.”

Gemma added: “I think the best part was ringing my mum and telling her. To my dad, nana, grandad, and grandma, who all watched it for many years, and were huge fans. I hope you’re proud of me up there.”

She signed of the post: “Rebecca will be gracing your screens in the next coming weeks.” A number of Gemma’s soap star pals and former co-stars couldn’t wait to congratulate her in the comments.

Tamara Wall, who will soon be reprising her role as Grace Black, wrote: “Omg amazing!!!” Corrie’s Brooke Vincent gushed: “Omg! ! ! ! ! ! This is fab.”

Catherine Tyldesley responded: “Thrilled for you love xx”, while Russ Owen star Stuart Manning added: “Hell yes Congratulations Gem xx.” Inside Soap reports that Gemma will be included in a “brief storyline” where plays one of Adam’s clients who falls for him.

Gemma’s time on Hollyoaks came to a dramatic end in 2014 when she was killed off following a train crash. After waving goodbye to acting for a while, the star became a Yoga instructor, kick-starting an online gym service.
