Hollyoaks star Nikki Sanderson revealed that she had suffered whiplash from her on-screen fights with co-star Jeremy Sheffield.
Sanderson, 39, plays Maxine Minniver on the Channel 4 soap and had been romantically paired with Sheffield, who plays bad boy Patrick Blake. To say that Blake was not a good man to Maxine was quite the understatement, as she was regularly the subject of his controlling behaviour and abuse.
Patrick was supposedly killed by his granddaughter Nico, played by Persephone Swales-Dawson, with his body being discovered hidden within a wall in the village. But even though his death was quite open and honest to show would not be returning, Metro newspaper confirmed that Patrick would be making a return once again.

His return to the village will have a connection to Dilly Harcourt, played by Emma Johnsey-Smith, as secrets connected to her are about to blow open. It also seems that this is just the beginning of Dilly’s torment, as Patrick will have an instrumental role in this poignant new plot.
But reflecting on her previous experience in working with actor Jeremy, Sanderson admitted that she had injured herself whilst filming some of the horrific abuse scenes. In one gut-wrenching moment, Maxine is violently thrown to the ground and hit by her abusive partner – so much so that it gave Nikki whiplash.
Speaking to The Sun in 2015, she opened up on how shooting some of the scenes were painful – in more ways than one. “Jeremy is brilliant, we get on very well; we can push the boundaries,” she explained.
“I would say, ‘Do this harder, grab me more severely’. But I did get hurt a few times.”
She said that after filming some of the horrific abuse Maxine suffers, she was hit with whiplash and bruising for three weeks. This was due to the fact that she mistimed when Jeremy was meant to hit her, causing her to get hit properly.
Nikki, however, was quick to dispel any rumours of him being responsible. “It was my own fault but when I hit the floor I didn’t do it how they told me to land,” she admitted.
Patrick’s return will no doubt cause trouble for the residents in the village as he lures Dilly into his trap to get full revenge on Sienna. Speaking to Metro, Emma Johnsey-Smith said that there is a feeling of power play between the seemingly unlikely pair.
“It’s tricky to describe their dynamic without giving away the big twist, but right from the off there is this underlying dominance naturally that is given from Patrick towards Dilly,” she said. “He has this dominance over her and I do think that is morphed into this idea that she is in awe of him.
“She has this ideology of him and as interactions develop between them, that ideology does start to change with the help of Sienna,” she added. “She has this kind of dream like idea of him and I suppose throughout time as truths come up that starts to change.”
Hollyoaks airs every weekday at 7pm on E4 and is available to stream on All 4.
