Hollywood bodyguard ‘wasn’t scared’ working with Michael Jackson after time in Iraq

Michael Jackson’s security guard has revealed what the pop sensation was really like.

Simon Newton spoke to Daily Star in an exclusive interview and explained that the King of Pop was not what many people would expect from an international celebrity. The former security guard told us: “He probably was what I expected but he was quite shy, considering he was someone so famous. He was quite softly spoken, he came across as quite shy.”

The bodyguard, who has worked for the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, was part of Jackson’s huge posse and helped protect the musician. He worked tirelessly to keep the singer out of trouble as fans would try to “touch him” and “just be a nuisance” when they saw the star.

Because of this, Simon has said that he was “most on guard” with the Thriller singer: “Probably [with] Michael Jackson, just because of the fanbase. Following us all around all the time, couldn’t take your eyes off him for a second.”

While working for the star, Newton said that he “got to speak to him for a little bit”. He was part of a “five security guard” entourage, plus “hair, makeup, wardrobe and managers,” along with nannies for his children.

“Michael was quite big so we didn’t get to speak to him that much, not as much as I would do normally to the others [clients].” Even though he was “most on guard” around Michael, it wasn’t a patch on his past career: “I worked in Iraq and Afghanistan for a long time, as a bodyguard, so once you’ve been somewhere like that you’re not scared of the UK. It was very different, I did nearly six years [over there].”

Simon “gave it all up four or five years ago” but still owns his own private company. He is currently also focussing on his film career after going to acting school: “The next three movies I’ve got are all UK films, all acting roles. One is a spy, kind of action thriller, and the other two are kind of gangster and football violence themed.”

Simon is filming in the UK and Ibiza and confirmed that he will be working alongside some Hollywood names, although isn’t allowed to reveal who just yet.
