EXCLUSIVE: Homes Under The Hammer host Martin Roberts estimates he was poked around 3,000 properties, and only two homes have given him the creeps – the new owners eventually razed it to the ground
Homes Under The Hammer host Martin Roberts has admitted he was spooked by a haunted house on the show.
He said he and his crew felt a presence and then a lightbulb dropped from the ceiling and flew across the room. Martin, 61, told Daily Star Sunday: “In all the time that we’ve been doing the show – and bear in mind I’ve now visited about 3,000 properties – there have only been two times that we’ve all sensed something a bit strange.
“But there was one time when we were this house just outside Warrington and it had all ivy growing through all the windows.
“And there were all these security cameras everywhere and we were doing the interview in the bedroom and I was chatting to the person who’d bought it.
“And a light bulb – one of those pendant light bulbs – fell out. The light fell out of the lightbulb holder – which is weird in itself.
“But instead of landing directly below where the force of gravity would take it, it landed four feet to the left.
“So it came out the socket and went, ‘Wham!’ and landed over there.
“And we were all like, ‘That was a bit weird! Let’s get on with this quite quickly and leave this place.’
“Anyway, it turns out the estate agent told us that the man who had lived in the house was a recluse who was paranoid that people were trying to get into his house, which is why the security cameras were all over the place.
“And he obviously didn’t like us being there at all. And when we went back, the actual people who bought it demolished the house.
“So I think that they got the same feeling, having tried to renovate it that, ‘You know what, I think this is just one we knock down and start again.’”
Martin, who is working with gaming firm 10bet, also revealed why he thinks the BBC show is still such a hit and has lasted 21 years.
He added: “Because it’s real. That’s the biggest thing that I keep coming back to, the fact that we don’t fudge anything. What you see is true stories. And I think for that reason, it’s very approachable.
“It’s very relatable. People can watch and say, ‘Actually, I could imagine doing that.’ And so I think there’s entertainment, but there’s also take home advice that people might carry on and do their own thing with.
“So it’s a fairly simple formula which has stood the test of time and I’m really proud of it, really.”
