Homes Under the Hammer secrets unearthed as guest admits how much they were paid

Some of the secrets of Homes Under the Hammer have been discovered thanks to fans.

The BBC show has been entertaining viewers for more than 20 years, as it looks to show how much renovations can add value to a property. The show, hosted by Martin Roberts, Martel Maxwell and Dion Dublin, has been much adored by fans and viewers alike.

Together, the trio look for properties across the country that can be bought and sold at auction here in the UK. They then follow the renovations as they happen and once the repairs are done, the new owners can revel in how much money the newly done-up house is worth.

Fans watching the show have always been intrigued in how the programme is brought together, and now it seems one social media user has the answers. Taking to social forum Mumsnet, one fan asked their fellow users a question on the show.

“Has anyone been on Homes Under the Hammer?” they wrote, “Just watching a load of episodes for inspiration. Just wondered if anyone had been on the show and what was it actually like?”

Soon after the initial question was posted, the account was inundated with messages of connections and secrets behind the show’s production. Many engrossed viewers were keen to share their ties to the show – no matter how tenuous.

But one account that interacted with the post left fans in a frenzy, after they spilled all the secrets from behind the scenes. Identifying herself only as ‘Violet’, the person spoke about her time on the home renovation hit.

“I went on it a few years ago,” Violet said. “Was approached at the auction just after we signed the papers for exchange and asked, very politely, if we’d like to be on the programme.

“We agreed to a phone call and they followed up and filmed us a couple of weeks later. Lucy turned up and was very friendly, but professional; they followed up regularly and came back and filmed only when we were ready.”

However, for appearing on the BBC programme, Violet and their partner admitted they got paid, but confessed they thought they should have gotten more. They added that the scenes people watch on the BBC might not give the full story, as certain parts of Violet’s tale were left out.

“Our finish was delayed as I got breast cancer – they asked if we wanted to include that in the finished programme and I declined,” they said. “They were always pleasant and professional, never pushy. We got £100 for each of the two filming days, which are quite long.”

Violet finished by insisting that no other extra costs were accounted for, and there were no benefits or discounts on the work due to it being shown on TV. “We were very honest about our costs – I very much doubt most people on there are,” they closed off.
