Horror fans ‘walk out’ of terrifying new movie branded ‘so grim’ by cinema-goers

Horror fans have been left so freaked out by one “grim” new film that they’ve left cinemas in droves.

That film is 2024 flick Night Swim, currently showing in theatres around the UK. It follows a family living in the suburbs who discover their swimming pool is haunted by a malevolent spirit. Based on a short film from 2014, the movie is produced by horror icons Jason Blum and James Wan.

When the family move into their new home, the pool has been abandoned for years after a tween girl was gobbled up by a monster there in the nineties. And in a promising trailer, a young couple can be seen playing Marco Polo in the dark waters – before a gruesome spirit appears.

It stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon – but the film hasn’t caused a mass walk-out due to fear, but rather from disappointment. Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their thoughts, plenty were so let down by the film they left the cinema doors swinging.

One wrote: “Add Night Swim to the list of movies I have walked out of. Terrible!” As another agreed: “I saw Night Swim last night. Well, part of it. I walked out in the third act. Complete trash.”

“Just walked out of the theatre watching Night Swim, that movie is terrible – made it to the pool party and decided that was enough for me!” a third viewer agreed. Somebody else chimed in: “Wow Night Swim is god-awful bad!!! 30 mins in and I walked out.”

“Foolishly hoped the premise may have been unique enough to serve as the basis for an okay movie,” another moaned. “It didn’t. It really, really didn’t. Two people walked out – there were only about 12 people in the screening to begin with!”

However, others were loving the new thriller, with one fan writing: “I saw Night Swim today, and I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think it was going to be super scary, being PG-13, but it got me not once but twice! And I’m a sucker for a good jump scare. It was really tense at times, like I had to unclench my everything!”

Someone else branded it “scary and good”, while another fan wrote: “Today I went to the movies to go see Night Swim before my shift started, and it was really good and kind of scary, so this is why I don’t swim at night ever.”

Executive producer Ryan Turek promised Bloody Disgusting: “The pool inherently just lends itself to so many great movie moments. You’ve got that weird, creepy drain at the bottom of the pool that everybody messes with. There was a great book that I read about a guy who sat on one, and terrible things happened. There’s the kind of pool flap filter that people love to mess with.”

He added: “And if you can tell an exciting, scary story and make us feel something, then I think we’ve all won. It’s just a fulfilling story to tell.”
